large and heavy sewn PAPERBACK, very good used copy with opening crease marks on spine, some wear from use but solid copy with sewn binding. SAINT, ANDREW. Richard Norman Shaw. New Haven: Published for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art London by Yale University Press, 1977, second printing, xx, 487pp., . Shaw, Richard Norman, 1831-1912 - Series: Studies in British art Richard Norman Shaw (1831-1912) was the most fertile, representative, and immediately influential domestic architect of the later Victorian period. His training and early career coincided with the heyday of the Gothic Revival, a style in which he designed a handful of original churches. His most prolific period of practice saw the triumph of the 'Old English' and 'Queen Anne' domestic styles which are largely associated with his name. A series of powerful urban building projects designed towards the end of Shaw's career reveal him as one of the foremost proponents of a revived classicism. In each of these styles the piquant originality of Shaw's designs and the brilliance of his planning captivated his contemporaries in both the architectural and the social world. He became the undisputed leading architect of the day and the precursor of such different talents as Lutyens and Voysey. In the United States, Shaw's distinctive contribution to English domestic architecture played a formulative part in the evolution of the 'Shingle Style'. - Andrew Saint was a lecturer in the history of art at Essex University and is now working for the Greater London Council as architectural editor of The Survey of London. - CONTENTS: 1. Apprenticeship -- 2. South and north -- 3. The country house -- 4. The pattern of practice -- 5. Turning point -- 6. The town house and the path to classicism -- 7. The churches -- 8. The 1890s -- 9. Hardcover. Light sage cloth, color pictorial dust jacket, 317 pp., color & BW illus. "The leading landscape gardener of later Georgian England, Humphry Repton (1752-1818) was innovative and prolific, undertaking more than four hundred commissions during his thirty-year career. Repton worked for a wide variety of clients, notably the dukes of Portland and Bedford, and on many kinds of sites throughout England. He also promoted his profession in extensive writings about the theory and practice of landscape gardening. This book examines Repton's career and work in the context of the changing human geography of his time. Fully illustrated with many previously unpublished pictures, the book charts Repton's vision of England, how his style changed and persisted over time and from place to place, how he influenced his profession, and how he fashioned a social identity for himself."
