The SPANISH CHAPEL opened on the eighth of December, 1791. The Roman Catholic Relief Act 1791 repealed some of the laws affecting Catholic worship, a chapel was built to designs by Joseph Bonomi on the corner of Spanish Place and Charles Street (now George Street) in London's West End, largely through the efforts of Thomas Hussey, chaplain at the embassy. Most of the objects of piety in the present church are legacies from this older building. In 1827 the official Spanish connection with the chapel ceased and it was handed over to the London Vicariate. However, there is much in the present church of its Spanish heritage including Alfonso XIII's personal standard which is in a frame over the sacristy door, and the parishioners of Spanish Place have never forgotten their debt to Spain for having established and maintained the mission in the dark days. An unofficial connection with the Embassy of Spain has continued and is still cherished by the Church of St James today. 8vo. **Reduced shipping on this item. Contemporary half skiver, lightly rubbed, over marbled paper backed boards. Overall a very good copy. Augustin Barruel ( 1741-1820 ), a French Jesuit Priest, and controversialist. To escape the horrors of the French Revolution Barruel fled to England about 1791 where he became almoner to the refugee Prince of Conti. In 1793 he wrote the Histoire du Clergé dur la Revolution Française ( "History of the Clergy during the French Revolution" ). The book is dedicated to the English nation in recognition of the enormous hospitality showed toward the persecuted French ecclesiastics during the Revolution. However he is probably best remembered for his book - Memoirs, illustrating the history of Jacobinism, London. [ 1797 ] - 98, in which he strongly suggests the French Revolution was planned and put into practise by secret societies. ESTC T80488.

First Edition
FIRST EDITION of this translation. 12mo (in 6s), 152 x 84 mms., pp. vi [vii blank, viii Approbation], 210 [211 - 212 Contents], errata slip pasted to verso of title-page, newly rebound in quarter calf, marbled boards, red leather label. A very good copy. Fleury (1649 - 1723) published Les M urs des Israëlites in 1722, shortly before his death. The first English translation, by Ellis Farnsworth, under the title A Short History of the Israelites. With an Account of their Manners, Customs, Laws, Polity and Religion. A comparison of the two texts suggests that Cordell benefited from the work of Farnsworth. A further version was published in 1805 by Rev. Adam Clarke, Claude Fleury's History of the Ancient Israelites. Cordell (1720 - 1791) was both a Jacobite and Roman Catholic priest. Leo Gooch in ODNB records that "Cordell's later publication of translations from the French of some obscure works prompted Henry Rutter, a fellow missioner in the area, to remark that he had cacoethes scribendi; Rutter also questioned Cordell's wisdom because many unsold copies of the books were left on Cordell's hands (Gooch, Revival). Cordell was influential in the development of the book trade in Newcastle. His scholarly reputation led to an offer of the presidency of the English College at St Omer in 1778 but he declined it." ESTC T119592 locates only two copies in North American libraries, Duke and Florida. There is also a copy in the BL.
