Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Meet Charlie. He's never been the luckiest fisherman on the coast, just the oldest (and to hear him tell it, the smartest). Charlie's dream is to catch the biggest fish in the sea, so when Roger down at the bait shop announces the first annual Fish-or-Cut-Bait Fishing Tournament, Charlie signs up. In his trusty rowboat, the C-Worthy, with a squishy, squirmy little worm on his hook, Charlie goes to sea and sits patiently waiting for a Big Fish. But what he catches--after the battle of his lifetime--is not only a surprise to Charlie but to everyone at Roger's Bait and Supply Shop. Unlike Hemingway's hero, Charlie turns his quest for a big fish into an amusing adventure that involves a bad case of the hiccups. Charlie turns his discouragement into triumph. This is a story of optimism, perseverance . and fisherman's luck. Donato, Angela (illustrator).…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Twenty-three-year-old Elizabeth Sprague has recently graduated from her botany studies at Wellesley College and now wants to leave her secure life with her parents in Boston to go to the Florida Everglades to study the plants there--something that in 1893 no woman has ever done. Her domineering father has other plans for her, namely, marrying her to a young man Beth detests in order to join his business with that of a prominent family. Her solution is to go off to St. Augustine with her aunt as chaperone. Her family assumes this will satisfy her Florida longings, but once in St. Augustine she figures out a way to head farther south, wisely carrying a derringer in her handbag. What she finds there is a wild and forbidding frontier inhabited by dangerous animals and even more dangerous men. She is warned about the poisonous swamp miasmas, the evil "night folks," and especially the ominous Swamp Ape, a hairy half-creature-half-man said to roam there. But none of this will prepare her for what she finds lurking deep within the Glades. Beth finds much more than unique and interesting plants in the Everglades. She finds that she is a woman who can face danger of every sort--from hurricanes and alligators to wild and desperate men--and hold her own. She proves she isn't just a "bucket flower," a pampered person unfit to face the rigors of the swamp. She finds her way, one much different from the one her parents had planned for her--and even quite different from the one she had planned for herself.…

Paperback. Condition: Fair. Accelerated Reader Quiz available: #117017 Eleven-year-old Solomon Freeman and his parents, newly freed slaves, are building a homestead in north Florida's wilderness, living their dream of independence. Their battle to survive is filled with harsh difficulties in this wild and fickle new home, and they all work long, hard days. Solomon's father, Moses, dreams of his only son sharing his love for the land. Lela, his mother, tries to shield Solomon from his father's expectations, for she knows that the boy's heart is not in the fields. Solomon is a natural woodsman, good at fishing and hunting. Though these skills bring food to their meager table, Moses wants his son to concentrate on farming. Further distancing father and son is the arrival of a refined Virginian brandishing a fifteen-foot whip with deadly precision. Solomon is captivated by the man and the whip while Moses despises the whip and dreads his son's fascination with the newcomer. Lela struggles to make a home, keep peace between her husband and son, and continue Solomon's education as they fight to survive. When the chance comes to go on a cattle drive, Solomon jumps at it--though his parents are reluctant to let him go. He confronts a new world as he rides a Florida marshtackie horse, wields his whip rounding up a large herd of wild cattle, and brings them to market at the coast--where he sees sights he had never dreamed existed. Are the Freemans strong enough to build a successful homestead? Will they be welcomed in this hard place where blacks have only been slaves in years past? Will the family seal its bond through shared hardship or splinter irreparably? Does Solomon have the wisdom he needs to face challenges beyond his years and see the family through its perils? See all of the books in this series.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Born in Minnesota in 1890 and raised and educated in Massachusetts, Marjory Stoneman Douglas came to Florida in 1915 to work for her father, who had just started a newspaper called the Herald in a small town called Miami. In this frontier town, she recovered from a misjudged marriage, learned to write journalism and fiction and drama, took on the fight for feminism and racial justice and conservation long before those causes became popular, and embarked on a long and uncommonly successful voyage into self-understanding. Way before women did this sort of thing, she recognized her own need for solitude and independence, and built her own little house away from town in an area called Coconut Grove. She still lives there, as she has for over 40 years, with her books and cats and causes, emerging frequently to speak, still a powerful force in ecopolitics. Marjory Stoneman Douglas begins this story of her life by admitting that the hardest thing is to tell the truth about oneself and ends it stating her belief that life should be lived so vividly and so intensely that thoughts of another life, or a longer life, are not necessary. The voice that emerges in between is a voice from the past and a voice from the future, a voice of conviction and common sense with a sense of humor, a voice so many audiences have heard over the years tough words in a genteel accent emerging from a tiny woman in a floppy hat which has truly become the voice of the river.…
