Condition: Very Good. Becoming a Web developer these days requires expertise in a variety of disp arate languages and tools and usually requires a whole shelf of books. Core Web Programming delivers all you need to become a competent Web developer in one massive text. It covers HTML, Java, Common Gateway Interface (CGI), and JavaScript thoroughly with plenty of real-world programming examples. The first part of the book covers HTML 3.2, including the basic tags and mo re advanced topics such as frames and cascading style sheets. This section discusses Netscape and Microsoft extensions to HTML (such as using plug-ins for playing multimedia content and ActiveX controls). The tutorial to HTML is comparable to those in other books of this category and includes some o f the author's tips for creating more portable HTML. The next section covers the basics of Java from a programmer's standpoint, including the advantages of Java and how to access Java documentation and t ools. The tutorial that follows stresses the built-in libraries in core Jav a, covering drawing images and other graphics capabilities. Event handling in Java Developer's Kit (JDK) 1.02 (probably unnecessary these days) and JD K 1.1 receive full treatment. The chapter on graphics double-buffering for smooth animation within Java programs is particularly useful, and the autho r's treatment of how to access the network capabilities of Java is perhaps unmatched. (Topics here include how to load URLs using Java's network class es and even how to create a simple HTTP server in Java.) The third section of this text moves to CGI programming using Java on the server. The author introduces the basi.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. A tight clean copy, no markings throughout: This is the definitive guide to systems management for every IT professional with responsibility for maintaining the stability and responsiveness of IT production environments. Rich Schiesser, one of the world's most experienced IT infrastructure managers, covers every systems management discipline, every type of IT environment, and all three elements of success: technology, processes, and people. Schiesser begins by explaining how each key discipline of systems management has evolved, and how they can be integrated to maximize business value in mainframe, client/server, desktop, and Web-enabled IT environments. He then focuses on the key "people-related" aspects of systems management, showing how to gain executive support, organize and staff for systems management, and deliver world-class customer service. Next, he moves on to the 12 key processes involved in systems management, including production acceptance, change management, problem management, storage and network management, capacity planning, security, disaster recovery, and many others. Finally, Schiesser shows how to leverage technology to develop, automate, evaluate, and integrate processes, and offers effective new techniques for Web and client/server environments.

Book
Condition: Near Fine. Advanced Java Networking gives the reader a well-rounded and fairly detaile d introduction to Java networking technologies. The subjects Sridharan cove rs sound like a seminar list from a software development conference: IDL/CO RBA, RMI, JDBC/SQL, JavaBeans, Castanet, JMAPI, servlets, and JavaOS, to na me a few. But this isn't a dilettantish cursory look at each of many techno logies. Rather, this book provides the programmer with the kind of informat ion needed to make solid design and implementation decisions. In the chapte r on RMI, for example, Sridharan spends a little time explaining the attrac tions and shortcomings of the specification. Then, while walking you throug h the creation of a calendaring application, shows you some of the ins and outs of actual program design with RMI. All of these features are in addition to the excellent treatment of general advanced Java stuff you'll want to understand thoroughly before you plunge into the really hairy stuff. Furthermore, all the code appears on the comp anion CD-ROM for easy reference. This book is ideal for knowledgeable programmers who are trying to decide how to attack a problem. You might need to use another book for further details on your solution of choice, but this is a fine place to start.
