Octavo, softbound (stiff yellow illus. slick wrappers), 203 pp. Fine. From lower cover: "Few episodes in American history are more romantic or controversial than the Battle of Little bighorn. For a hundred years scholars have sought a satisfactory explanation of what occurred that fateful day in 1876 when Sioux and Cheyenne warriors overwhelmed the Seventh Cavalry." Custer's men were supposedly superior in every respect except numbers, yet the unorganized and poorly armed Indian warriors inflicted one of the most stinging defeats ever suffered by the U.S. Cavalry. Of all the explanations put forward since then, none will be as controversial as the one offered here by Dr. Marquis, an obscure, dedicated physician who for many years in the first quarter of this century worked with the Cheyenne people near the Custer battlefield. He befriended the aged veterans of the Custer fight, became adept at their sign language, and spent days in conversation with them. The old warriors lilke him, and spoke to him honestly and frrely. After years of working with them, Marquis wrote this book. He had reached a simple but shocking conclusion: the troops at Little Bighorn with Custer had panicked, and most of them had committed suicide! One hundred years after the event, this curious, fascinating book appears. Western Americana, American History, U. S. History, United States History, Americana, U.S.-iana, Custer, Battle of Little Bighorn. yslic.

Thomas Bailey Marquis (1869 - 1935) was an American self-taught historian and ethnographer who wrote about the Plains Indians and other subjects of the American frontier. He had a special interest in the destruction of George Armstrong Custer's battalion at the Battle of the Little Bighorn, which became his lifelong obsession. Marquis' body of work is valued by historians for his recording of the life stories of several Plains Indians and his writing on their way of life, particularly those involved in the Custer fight. Marquis developed his own theories regarding the history of the Cheyenne. One idea in particular, that many of Custer's men committed suicide when the situation became hopeless, proved to be highly controversial. This idea first surfaced in the Wooden Leg narrative, but was most fully developed in ''Keep the Last Bullet for Yourself'', considered by Marquis to be his most important work and the culmination of his Custer research. The latter was not published during Marquis' life; much of his work did not appear in print until the 1970s. The last book to be published, ''The Cheyennes of Montana'' (pub. 1978), is regarded as especially valuable by historians. (from Pasco Libraries).
