Petsch, Charles Henry Nimitz, Wilhelm Victor Keidel, Louis Martin, Rebecca Cohn, William Molter, Max Hirsch, Brian Benben, Tom Loeffler, Buffy Tyler, Tate Randle, Frank Van der Stucken, Stan Hollmig. Excerpt: Lyndon Baines Johnson (August 27, 1908 January 22, 1973), often referred to as LBJ, was a US politician who served as the 36th President of the United States (1963-1969) after his service as the 37th Vice President of the United States (1961-1963). He is one of four people who served in all four elected federal offices of the United States: Representative, Senator, Vice President and President. Johnson, a Democrat, served as a United States Representative from Texas, from 1937 1949 and as United States Senator from 1949 1961, including six years as United States Senate Majority Leader, two as Senate Minority Leader and two as Senate Majority Whip. After campaigning unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination in 1960, Johnson was asked by John F. Kennedy to be his running mate for the 1960 presidential election. Johnson succeeded to the presidency following the assassination of John F. Kennedy, completed Kennedy's term and was elected President in his own right, winning by a large margin in the 1964 Presidential election. Johnson was greatly supported by the Democratic Party and, as President, was responsible for designing the 'Great Society' legislation that included laws that upheld civil rights, Public Broadcasting, Medicare, Medicaid, environmental protection, aid to education, and his 'War on Poverty.' He was renowned for his domineering personality and the 'Johnson treatment,' his coercion of powerful politicians in order to advance legislation. Simultaneously, he greatly escalated direct American involvement in the Vietnam War. As the war dragged on, Johnson's popularity as President steadily declined. After the 1966 mid-term Congressional elections, his re-election bid in the 1968 United States presidential election collapsed as a result of turmoil within the Democratic Party related to opposition to the Vietnam War. He withdrew from the race amid growing opposition to his policy on the Vietnam War and a worse-than-expected showing in the New Hampshire pri 30 pp. Englisch.

Excerpt: Käthe Schmidt Kollwitz (July 8, 1867 April 22, 1945) was a German painter, printmaker, and sculptor whose work offered an eloquent and often searing account of the human condition in the first half of the 20th century. Her empathy for the less fortunate, expressed most famously through the graphic means of drawing, etching, lithography, and woodcut, embraced the victims of poverty, hunger, and war. Initially her work was grounded in Naturalism, and later took on Expressionistic qualities. Kollwitz was born in Königsberg, Province of Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia), the fifth child in her family. Her father, Karl Schmidt, was a radical Social democrat who became a mason and house builder. Her mother, Katherina Schmidt, was the daughter of Julius Rupp, a Lutheran pastor who was expelled from the official State Church and founded an independent congregation. Her education was greatly influenced by her grandfather's lessons in religion and socialism. Recognizing her talent, Kollwitz' father arranged for her to begin lessons in drawing and copying plaster casts when she was twelve. At sixteen she began making drawings of working people, the sailors and peasants she saw in her father's offices. Wishing to continue her studies at a time when no colleges or academies were open to young women, Kollwitz enrolled in an art school for women in Berlin. There she studied with Karl Stauffer-Bern, a friend of the artist Max Klinger. The etchings of Klinger, their technique and social concerns, were an inspiration to Kollwitz. At the age of seventeen, Kollwitz became engaged to Karl Kollwitz, a medical student. In 1888, she went to Munich to study at the Women's Art School, where she realized her strength was not as a painter, but a draftsman. In 1890, she returned to Königsberg, rented her first studio, and continued to draw laborers. In 1891, Kollwitz married Karl, by this time a doctor, who tended to the poor in Berlin, where the couple moved into the large apartment that wou 32 pp. Englisch.

A. Excerpt: Kaliopi Bukle (Aromanian: ; Macedonian: , pronounced ; born December 28, 1966 in Kicevo), more simply known as Kaliopi, is a popular Macedonian singer and song-writer. She is one of the most recognisable names on the Balkan music scene. She is known for her strong voice and a signature high-pitched scream. Kaliopi Bukle showed interest in music at a young age and in 1976, she entered in the Macedonian children's festival 'Zlatno Slavejce' with the song 'Tebe majka ceka', previously sung by great Tereza Kesovija and secured first place herself. Kaliopi later toured with the choir of Zapro Zaprov 'Razvigorce' through Czechoslovakia, Slovenia (then within their native Yugoslavia) and Austria between 1978 and 1980. She then joined the class of Marija Nikolovska, where she studied solo singing for a total of four years, to continue her training in the Music Academy in the class of Blagoja Nikolovski in 1984. Kaliopi competed in ranked third in the 1984 Yugoslavian solo singing contest, despite her being the youngest classical music singer at the festival. She then joined a new band named after her and recorded their first two songs by request of the Macedonian Radio, titled 'Tomi' ('Tommy') and 'Nemoj da me budis' (Don't Wake me up'). She participated in the Opatija festival as a member of Kaliopi and won best interpretation for the song Leo , awarded by the journalists of Yugoslavia. The bend published its debut album in 1986 for RTV Ljubljana (radio and TV broadcast) also named after her. That year, the band also participated in the Split Festival in which it was awarded the prize for the best debut performer for their performance of the song Da More Zna (If Sea Knows), which was also proclaimed to be the most listened and played song on the radio during that month.

Centrica is the largest supplier of gas to domestic customers in the UK, and one of the largest suppliers of electricity, operating under the trading names 'Scottish Gas' in Scotland and 'British Gas' in the rest of the UK. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index. British Gas plc demerged on 17 February 1997 to form two separate companies: Centrica plc and BG plc. Centrica took over gas sales and gas trading, services and retail businesses, together with the gas production operations in the North and South Morecambe gas fields. BG plc was renamed BG Group plc in December 1999. BG Group plc uses the British Gas name overseas but it is a separate company to Centrica and has no involvement with the British Gas retail brand in the UK In 1998, Centrica s supplier monopoly for gas came to an end. Centrica maintained the British Gas retail brand but is only allowed to use this brand name in the UK. The electricity market also opened up to competition and, through the British Gas brand, the company started supplying its first domestic electricity customers. In late 1998, under CEO Sir Roy Gardner and Finance Director Mark Clare, Centrica attempted to diversify firstly by developing the Goldfish credit card, then in 1999 by acquiring the AA for Pds. 1.1 billion. In 2000 Centrica further diversified with the opportunistic purchase of OneTel in the UK, a residential telecoms operator. Soon afterwards Centrica also bought the Dyno franchise group (best known for its Dyno-Rod drains unblocking service). In September 2008 the Company acquired the Caythorpe gas-producing field near Bridlington to use for storage purposes. In 1406, the Leopoldinian lines split their territories: The Ernestine line received the Duchies of Styria, Carinthia and Carniola, also called Inner Austria: The Elder Tyrolean Line received Tyrol and soon also Further Austria. These territories were also called Upper Austria: Matthias Corvinus, King of Hungary, claimed the Austrian territories and occupied Austria proper and Styria. Claiming the title 'Duke of Austria', he resided in Vienna from 1485 to his death in 1490. Lower Austria (Austria proper) passed to Ferdinand's 1st son Maximilian: Upper Austria (Tyrol, Further Austria) passed to Emperor Ferdinand's 2nd son Ferdinand: Inner Austria ('Inner-Österreich') (Styria, Carinthia and Carniola) passed to Emperor Ferdinand's 3rd son Charles: The Austrian territories were reunited again by inheritance in 1619 under Ferdinand III, Archduke of Inner Austria, but in 1623 five years into the Thirty Years' War he had so much to do with, Ferdinand divided them yet again, when he made his younger brother Leopold, who had been governor over Upper Austria, Archduke of those territories. Lower Austria and Inner Austria remained 42 pp. Englisch.

Excerpt: FC Bayern Munich (German: IPA: ), (English: ), is a German sports club based in Munich, Bavaria. It is best known for its professional football team, which is the most successful football club in Germany, having won 22 German titles and 15 cups. The club was founded in 1900 by eleven football players led by Franz John. Although Bayern won its first national championship in 1932, the club was not selected for the Bundesliga at its inception in 1963. In the middle of the 1970s, the club had its period of greatest success, when the famous team led by Franz Beckenbauer won the European Cup three times in a row (1974 76). In recent years they have been by far the most successful team in German football, winning six of the last ten championships. The club's last international title was the Intercontinental Cup in 2001, though they won their fourth European Cup the same year. Since the beginning of the 2005 06 season, Bayern plays its home games in the Allianz Arena. Previously the team had played in Munich's Olympic Stadium for 33 years. The team colours are red and white, and the team crest shows the colours of Bavaria. Bayern is a membership-based club with 162,187 members. There are also 2,764 officially-registered fan clubs with 192,160 members. The club has other departments for chess, handball, basketball, gymnastics, bowling, table tennis, referees, and senior football with more than 1,100 active members. FC Bayern premises FC Bayern Munich was founded by members of a Munich gymnastics club (MTV 1879). When a congregation of members of MTV 1879 decided on 27 February 1900 that the footballers of the club would not be allowed to join the German Football Association (DFB), eleven members of the football division left the congregation and on the same evening founded Fußball-Club Bayern München. Within a few months Bayern achieved high-scoring victories against all local rivals and reached the semifinals of the 1900 01 South German championship. In the following years 76 pp. Englisch.

Excerpt: Secretariat (March 30, 1970 October 4, 1989) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse, that in 1973 became the first U.S. Triple Crown champion in twenty-five years, setting new race records in two of the three events in the Series the Kentucky Derby (1:59 2/5), and the Belmont Stakes (2:24) records that still stand today. Secretariat was sired by Bold Ruler out of Somethingroyal, by Princequillo. He was foaled at Meadow Farm in Caroline County, Virginia. Like his famous predecessor Man o' War, Secretariat was a large chestnut colt and was given the same nickname, 'Big Red.' Owned by Penny Chenery (aka Penny Tweedy), he was trained by Lucien Laurin and mainly ridden by fellow Canadian jockey Ron Turcotte, along with apprentice jockey Paul Feliciano (first two races), and veteran Eddie Maple (last race). He raced in Penny Chenery's Meadow Stable's blue and white checkered colors and his groom was Eddie Sweat. Secretariat stood approximately 16.2 hands (66 inches, 168 cm) tall, and weighed 1,175 pounds (533 kg), with a 75 inch girth, in his racing prime. The story of Secretariat began with the toss of a coin in 1968 between Christopher Chenery of Meadow Stables and Ogden Phipps of Wheatley Stable. The idea of a coin toss came from Phipps, the owner of Bold Ruler, and Bull Hancock of Claiborne Farms as a way to get the very best mares for Bold Ruler, and when the toss went their way, to add well-bred fillies to their own broodmare band. Bold Ruler was considered one of the important stallions of his time. He had a fine balance between speed and stamina, having had a frontrunning style but the stamina to go 1 1/4 miles; he finished 3rd in the 1957 Kentucky Derby. After his racing career, Bold Ruler was retired to Claiborne Farms but still was controlled by the Phipps family. This meant he would be bred to mainly Phipps' mares and not many of his offspring would find their way to the auction ring. Phipps and Hancock agreed to forgo a stud fee for Bold Ruler in exchange f 78 pp. Englisch.

Excerpt: 'Empire State of Mind' is a song by American rapper and hip hop artist Jay-Z, featuring vocals from R&B and soul singer Alicia Keys. It was released as the third single from Jay-Z's 11th studio album The Blueprint 3 (2009), from his Roc Nation label in October 2009. The song is an anthemic ode to both artists' native New York, and features a music sample of 'Love on a Two-Way Street' (1970) by The Moments. The track was originally written after Brooklyn natives Angela Hunte and Jane't 'Jnay' Sewell-Ulepic were feeling homesick while on an overseas trip in February 2009. The following month they sent the song in for consideration at Roc Nation, but the song received negative reviews. Initially discouraged, the duo sent the song to Jay-Z after being suggested to by an associate of EMI, and after an incident which they described as an omen. After hearing the song, Jay-Z immediately recorded it, having changed all of the verses, but keeping the hook. The track was supposed to feature Hunte on the song's hook, but when Hunte and Sewell-Ulepic were asked if they thought someone else would be more appropriate for the chorus, Hunte suggested Keys. Mary J. Blige was also considered for Keys' part, but Keys was chosen after Jay-Z heard the song's piano loop. The song was viewed as being an 'orchestral rap ballad' and has pop-rap musical styles. It contains references to drugs, locations in New York as well as its famous residents, and describes the city'. 92 pp. Englisch.

Although the totals reflect all games umpired, the years indicate only those seasons in which each individual was employed as a league umpire, omitting seasons in which they may have acted as an emergency substitute during their playing career. Umpires who were active in 2009 are indicated in bold face. 110 pp. Englisch.

Excerpt: In software engineering, a design pattern is a general reusable solution to a commonly occurring problem in software design. A design pattern is not a finished design that can be transformed directly into code. It is a description or template for how to solve a problem that can be used in many different situations. Object-oriented design patterns typically show relationships and interactions between classes or objects, without specifying the final application classes or objects that are involved. Many patterns imply object-orientation or more generally mutable state, and so may not be as applicable in functional programming languages, in which data is immutable or treated as such. Design patterns reside in the domain of modules and interconnections. At a higher level there are architectural patterns that are larger in scope, usually describing an overall pattern followed by an entire system. There are many types of design patterns, like Patterns originated as an architectural concept by Christopher Alexander (1977/79). In 1987, Kent Beck and Ward Cunningham bega. 146 pp. Englisch.

Excerpt: The Office is an American comedy television series broadcast by NBC. An adaptation of the previous BBC series of the same name, it depicts the everyday lives of office employees in the Scranton, Pennsylvania, branch of the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. To simulate the look of an actual documentary, it is filmed in a single-camera setup, without a studio audience or a laugh track. The Office was adapted for American audiences by executive producer Greg Daniels, a veteran writer for Saturday Night Live, King of the Hill, and The Simpsons. The creators of the original BBC series, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, are executive producers and also co-wrote the pilot episode with Daniels and wrote the season three episode, 'The Convict'. It is co-produced by Daniels' Deedle-Dee Productions, and Reveille Productions, in association with Universal Media Studios. The show debuted on NBC as a midseason replacement on March 24, 2005. Off-network syndication of The Office began in early 2008, notably on TBS and Fox-owned stations in the United States. The Office was renewed for a seventh season which premiered on September 23, 2010. Steve Carell confirmed that season seven would be his last season on the show. Despite this, NBC renewed the series for an eighth season on March 17, 2011. NBC programmer Kevin Reilly originally suggested Paul Giamatti to producer Ben Silverman for the role of Michael Scott, but the actor declined. Martin Short, Hank Azaria and Bob Odenkirk were also reported to be interested. In January 2004, Variety reported Steve Carell, of the popular Comedy Central program The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, was in talks to play the role. At the time, he was already committed to another NBC mid-season replacement comedy, Come to Papa, but the series was quickly canceled, leaving him fully committed to The Office. Carell later stated he had only seen about half of the original pilot episode of the British series before he auditioned. He did not continue 154 pp. Englisch.

Excerpt: Sicily (Italian and Sicilian: Sicilia, ) is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, comprising an autonomous region of Italy. Minor islands around it, such as the Aegadian Islands, Aeolian Islands, Pantelleria, Lampedusa are part of Sicily. Its official name is Regione Autonoma Siciliana (English: Sicilian Autonomous Region). Sicily, like all regions of Italy when viewed separately, has its own rich and unique culture, especially with regard to the arts, music, literature, cuisine, architecture and language. The Sicilian economy is well diversified. The agriculture sector is significant with citrus fruits (mainly oranges and lemons), olives and olive oil, grapes and wine. Tourism and real estate are also important sectors for the island (¿Economic sectors). Sicily also holds importance for archeological and ancient sites such as the Necropolis of Pantalica, the Valley of the Temples and Selinunte. The archaeological site of Selinunte contains five temples centered on an acropolis. There are continuous excavations that occur in Sicily due to its extensive history. Topography of Sicily Mount Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe. It is located in the Province of Catania. It is separated to the east from the Italian region of Calabria through the Strait of Messina. The distance between the island and mainland Italy by the Strait of Messina is about 2 miles wide in the north, and about 10 miles in the south of the Strait. The island is characterized by a densely mountainous landscape. The main mountain ranges are Madonie and Nebrodi in the north and Peloritani in the north-east, whereas the south-eastern Hyblaean are considered geologically as a continuation of the Italian Appennines.
