J'ai choisi la couleur parce qu'émotionnellement il y a plus d'avantages. Mon objectif est de montrer la fierté des gens que je photographie. Je trouve d'une grande richesse les styles éclectiques et les matériaux bon marché utilisés pour le décor des maisons » Zwelethu Mthethwa est un peintre et un photographe, et cela se voit. Dès les premières photographies qu'il a produites, il disait son inclination pour des compositions soignées et pour la couleur toujours adroitement maîtrisée, dosée, la couleur comme expression d'une intimité avec l'âme. La couleur comme lumière. Et ses images trahissaient d'emblée les éléments d'un classicisme très élaboré. Des tableaux, comme on n'en fait plus depuis des siècles. Des tableaux qui devraient venir habiter les galeries d'hypothétiques maisons de famille, des châteaux, des manoirs. Des tableaux qui, de la même manière que ces gens qui semblent habiter un passé qui prolonge la mémoire, se projettent dans le futur, c'est-à-dire dans l'immortalité. Simon Njami.

Ce sont ces gens-là qui, au long de cet ouvrage, ont la parole. J. Liebenberg est né à Johannesburg en 1958. A quatorze ans, un oncle lui offre un appareil de photographie. A peine âgé de dix-huit ans, il est engagé comme conscrit dans les forces d'occupation sud-africaines en Namibie. Autodidacte complet, il fait des milliers de photos de cette guerre secrète menée contre la SWAPO. Plus tard, après un court passage au journal The Namibian et à l'agence Reuter, époque au cours de laquelle ses photos font la première page de plusieurs journaux à travers le monde, John est engagé à la télévision NBC. Aujourd'hui, il est redevenu photographe freelance en Afrique du Sud. Entretien avec John Liebenberg, extrait : Les mots partent en rafales. Fracas des armes automatiques qui, depuis vingt ans, ont ponctué, sous le regard de John Liebenberg, l'histoire de l'Afrique Australe. Combats peu médiatiques, donc passés sous silence. « C'est la télévision qui fait l'histoire aujourd'hui. Pas de caméras, pas d'histoires, pas d'Histoire ! » Le 21 mars 1990, jour de l'indépendance de la Namibie, John Liebenberg est à Windhoek. Les caméras de télévision et les grands de ce monde défilent dans la rue principale rebaptisée « avenue de l'Indépendance ». Trois minutes dans les journaux télévisés en Europe et aux Etats-Unis et le pays est renvoyé à l'oubli tandis qu'à sa frontière nord, le gouvernement du MPLA de Dos Santos et l'UNITA de Savimbi continuent à se massacrer pour les diamants et le pétrole et qu'au sud, les townships comme Soweto sont à feu et à sang sous les derniers soubresauts de l'apartheid. A l'est, le Zimbabwe et le Botswana s'ingénient à rester discrets au contraire du Mozambique déchiré par une guerre aussi fratricide et meurtrière que celle de l'Angola.

Cet évènement eut des effets considérables sur la culture. Ce livre cessa d'être tribal pour devenir alexandrin d'abord, méditerranéen ensuite, mondial enfin.

Regard éclairé et exceptionnel de la femme d'un gouverneur de région qui deviendra chercheur reconnu. Renée Colin-Noguès passe deux années au c?ur du pays Sénoufo, à Sikasso et dans sa région le Kènèdougou, « Terre de Lumière ». Le pays est alors culturellement fort de ses rites et de sa société : la colonisation l'a blessé mais fondamentalement peu bouleversé. Avec son mari, Roland Colin, administrateur colonial, ils sont tous deux convaincus de vivre les derniers moments de la domination française et les prémices de l'indépendance. Ils apprennent la langue et vont de village en village. Roland prend des notes (peu administratives) pour approfondir la connaissance de la culture Sénoufo, Renée prend des photos de confiance partagée. Sans volonté ethnographique, ses photographies de c?ur renseignent aujourd'hui un univers des formes qui comme partout s'étiole, voire disparaît. En Afrique, Renée Colin-Noguès s'inscrit parmi ces photographes blancs du quotidien, souvent anonymes et méconnus, qui ne viennent pas faire des reportages à sensation ou « voler des images ». Coloniaux et personnalités atypiques comme Pierre Verger ou Anita Conti, ils sont un versant de cet échange historique qui marque pour longtemps les humanités qui les accueillent.
