Paperback. Condition: New. A young teenager enlisted into the Polish Army in 1938. Deported to the Soviet Union and imprisoned in a Siberian prison camp, this audacious soldier became reunited with his compatriots in Scotland where he trained as a paratrooper and took part in the fated WW2 Operation Market Garden, Arnhem in 1944.Fifty years later, then a patient in hospital, the soldier recounted his life's experience to my father in the next bed, who had the forethought to record their conversation onto a Dictaphone machine. My father's empathetic nature and harrowing childhood experiences of seeing HMS Foylebank destroyed by German bomber planes on his way to school in 1940 led to a unique and unlikely friendship. The discovery of these recordings in 2020 inspired The Polish Voice, a fully researched historical record of both men's lives, a tribute to them, reminding us of the importance to listen to one another and the legacy of a recorded voice.…

Paperback. Condition: New. Things Still Fall Apart shows that Africa is a neglected and exploited continent. Since it was invaded c.1500 by Europeans, it has accumulated only 1 per cent of the world's wealth, despite containing 16 per cent of the world's population and immense natural and human resources. This collection of memories by a Brazilian economist, from his 20 years working on the continent, explains that this relative stationary situation is caused mostly by political decisions. Political decisions made on behalf of domestic rulers and rich countries; meanwhile, the poor have no voice or power. The book challenges many historical narratives of the continent and unveils issues such as negative primitive accumulation and the politics of sexuality. The findings of this book reflect the reality of the poor and may be considered alarming and challenging - they need special attention and funding. If not, further stagnation, civil conflicts and migratory waves will persist. As a result, suffering for poor and future costs for rich countries will increase.…

Paperback. Condition: New. This book is from the reminiscences of Reddy Red Squirrel who hoped and dreamed of having a sibling. Reddy describes her own story:"This is a story about when I really wanted a sibling, wanted somebody to play with so much! And one day I got my wish! My own adoptive parents brought home a newer, younger sibling."Soon after Little Grey Squirrel came to live with us, I felt disappointed. It seemed that having a little brother was not exactly what I had hoped."My parents noticed I was feeling disappointed, frustrated, and angry. They recognized that I really felt very jealous. They kindly asked me about my feelings. They helped name my jealousy. Jealous of the attention and the seeming importance of the new little brother."In this primary caregiver (parent)-child therapeutic story the parent uses DDP-PACE to stay connected with the child's feelings. Reddy's parents noticed and named her feelings of disappointment as her hopes and dreams for a sibling were not as she expected. Through the story they offer Reddy acceptance, curiosity and empathy.Together they explored her feelings of jealousy when her new sibling joined their family. The book walks parents and children back and forth through, the feelings of jealousy. Reddy, the already-adopted child initially had no words for her feelings. The parents saw that the behaviours at home were their child's best effort to ask for help with new confused feelings. Acting younger, she returned to earlier developmental stages trying to re-establish inner stability and security. Reddy showed her feelings in anger, sadness and worry. Through connection and co-regulation her parents helped her make sense of her jealousy and understood how she needed them by her side. The book features full colour illustrations throughout. Paperback. Condition: New. The Brave Shall Inherit the Earth is the motto of the Rajputana Rifles, the oldest rifle regiment in the pre-World-War-Two Indian Army. It is a fitting epitaph to this remarkable young officer who commanded the mortar platoon in 3/6th Rajputana Rifles during the 14th Army's invasion of Burma in 1944. Denis O'Leary came from a family of soldiers; his father was also RajRif. Just out of officer training, a practicing Catholic, handsome, athletic, twenty years old, Denis joined 3/6th Rajputana Rifles on the eve of Field Marshal Slim's invasion of Burma in 1944. This book is the story of his Regiment in that Homeric engagement. It is also about the close friendships formed in war between a British officer and his Rajput and Punjabi 'Mussalman' soldiers. The Regiment 'had been fortunate in our introduction to war. It had been a gradual process.' Luckily Denis learnt quickly and by the time he came to his Kurukshetra - a decisive battle to hold Pear Hill against suicidal Japanese attacks during the Irrawaddy crossings - his mettle had been tested and forged. During this battle, in which he won his first Military Cross, he was badly wounded by shrapnel and evacuated back to India for the rest of the war, only re-joining his beloved battalion in pre-Independence Burma, which this account also covers. Denis O'Leary was a life-long soldier, he is a modest historian, he writes simply but eloquently. There are few books so hauntingly beautiful about something so savage as war.…
