San Francisco: Le Count and Strong, 1854-1855 (Howes, C427). Twenty original numbers (of 24 published) in the original printed wrappers of this "first California magazine" (Sabin's Biblioteca Americana). Edited by Ferdinand C. Ewer, there were only four semi-annual volumes; 1&2 in 1854, 3&4 in 1855. These include the first appearance of twenty (of 23) of the so-called "Shirley Letters" from Mrs. Louise Amelia Knapp Smith Clappe to her sister in Massachusetts; the original letters are not known to have survived. They were not reprinted until 1922. Educated in Amherst, Massachusetts, Louise Amelia Knapp Smith Clappe (1819-1906) accompanied her physician-husband to California in 1849. Mrs. Clappe writes of life in San Francisco and the Feather River mining communities of Rich Bar and Indian Bar. She focuses on the experiences of women and children, the perils of miners' work, crime and punishment, and relations with native Hispanic residents and Native Americans. Bret Harte is said to have based two of his stories on the "Shirley" letters (U.S. Library of Congress). There is an unrelated article signed "Shirley" in the December, 1854 issue - "Superstition", in which she very sweetly opposes Utilitarian philosophy. The Pioneer is useful today for many other reasons. Gary Kurutz, in his The California Gold Rush, a Descriptive Bibliography, 1848-1853, 1997, 133a, quoting Carl I. Wheat "These superbly readable and informative letters.may well be accorded first place in any gathering of notable Gold Rush literature". Nearly each number contains a "Monthly Summary of Events" and "Gossiping with Readers and Correspondents". A sampling of the many contributions: "What California Wants", "The Trees of Calaveras", "The Quicksilver Mine of Almaden", Alcalde Grants in the City of San Francisco", "Explorations in Oregon", Sketches of Eminent Californians", "State's Rights", "The Equality of the Sexes", "Chinese Letters", "The Old Graveyard at San Francisco in 1849", "Annals of San Francisco", "Origin of Quartz Rocks", "The Devil's Fiddle: a California Legend"; "The Last of the Transcendentalists" (Schelling). As for condition: Two lack the wrappers; one lacks the contents leaf; one front wrapper loose but present; two rear wrappers loose but present; one is complete but in two neatly separated pieces; not considering the above, five are about Fine, ten Very Good, five Good, only.
