Whereas ECCAI organizes two-week ACAI courses on different topics every second year, AgentLink s European Agent Systems Summer School (EASSS) has been an annual event since 1999. This year, both of these important events were merged together, giving weight to the fact that multi-agent systems currently represent one of the hottest topics in AI research. The name, ACAI 2001 Summer School, is intended to emphasize that this event continues the tradition of regular ECCAI activities (ACAI), as well as the EASSS summer schools of AgentLink. The Prague ACAI Summer School was proposed and initiated by both the Gerstner Laboratory, Czech Technical University, Prague (GL-CTU) and the Czech Society for Cybernetics and Informatics (CSKI), with the support of the Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Vienna (OFAI). Part of our motivation was catalyzed by experience gained in 1992 during the International Summer School Advanced Topics in Artificial Intelligence (see Springer s LNAI vol. 617) which was organized by the same Czech and Austrian bodies. One of the most important stimulating factors behind the organization of ACAI 2001 was the support provided by the European Commission to the Gerstner Laboratory within the frame of the MIRACLE Center of Excellence project (IST No.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 452 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -During the past several years, the world has entered the first phase of the Internet Revolution. Investors showed confidence and faith in the prospects of the Internet driven economy. In the US alone, some 30,000 dot com companies have sprung up to support electronic commerce with a wide variety of business models, technologies, and/or items or services to sell or even give away. Traditional businesses, so called brick and mortar, or offline, businesses, have started to respond to challenges by Internet based new competitors by augmenting their own businesses with Internet based, or online, businesses and/or filing lawsuits against them. The initial business to consumer orientation of electronic commerce is giving way to business to business commerce, with large corporations forming electronic exchanges or consortia to conduct commerce among members. Government, industry, and civic groups have started addressing social issues related to the Internet, such as taxation on electronic commerce, privacy, intellectual property rights, security, hacking, cyber crimes, digital divide, etc. Governments have started legitimizing electronic signatures and stepping up efforts to track down perpetrators of cyber crimes. The courts have started to wrestle with issues of privacy, intellectual property rights, crimes, and impediments to Internet driven economy.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 492 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -The main objective of this monograph is the study of a class of stochastic differential systems having unbounded coefficients, both in finite and in infinite dimension. We focus our attention on the regularity properties of the solutions and hence on the smoothing effect of the corresponding transition semigroups in the space of bounded and uniformly continuous functions. As an application of these results, we study the associated Kolmogorov equations, the large-time behaviour of the solutions and some stochastic optimal control problems together with the corresponding Hamilton- Jacobi-Bellman equations. In the literature there exists a large number of works (mostly in finite dimen sion) dealing with these arguments in the case of bounded Lipschitz-continuous coefficients and some of them concern the case of coefficients having linear growth. Few papers concern the case of non-Lipschitz coefficients, but they are mainly re lated to the study of the existence and the uniqueness of solutions for the stochastic system. Actually, the study of any further properties of those systems, such as their regularizing properties or their ergodicity, seems not to be developed widely enough. With these notes we try to cover this gap.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 344 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -The initial ideas behind this edited volume started in spring of 1998 - some two years before the sixtieth birthday of Bernard P. Zeigler. The idea was to bring together distinguished researchers, colleagues, and former students of Professor Zeigler to present their latest findings at the AIS' 2000 conference. During the spring of 1999, the initial ideas evolved into creating a volume of articles surrounding seminal concepts pertaining to modeling and simulation as proposed, developed, and advocated by Professor Zeigler throughout his scientific career. Also included would be articles describing progress covering related aspects of software engineering and artificial intelligence. As this volume is emphasizing concepts and ideas spawned by the work of Bernard P. Zeigler, it is most appropriate to offer a biographical sketch of his scientific life, thus putting into a historical perspective the contributions presented in this volume as well as new research directions that may lie ahead! Bernard P. Zeigler was born March 5, 1940, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, where he obtained his bachelor's degree in engineering physics in 1962 from McGill University. Two years later, having completed his MS degree in electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he spent a year at the National Research Council in Ottawa. Returning to academia, he became a Ph. D. student in computer and communication sciences at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 432 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -All the efforts to build an intelligent machine have not yet produced a satisfactory autonomous system despite the great progress that has been made in developing computer hardware over the last three decades. The complexity of the tasks that a cognitive system must perform is still not understood well enough. Let us call the endeavor of building intelligent systems as the construction of Perception Action Cycles (PAC). The key idea is to incorporate representation and learning in a flexible geometric system. Until now this issue has always been a matter of neurocomputing. The most frequently used algebraic system for neurocomputation is matrix algebra. However, calculations in geometric algebra often reveal a geometric structure which remains obscure in the equivalent matrix computations. The development of PAC in a unified comprehensive mathematical system is urgently needed to bring unity and coherance to the problems of artificial intelligence. Accordingly, we are motivated by the challenge of applying geometric algebra to the development of PAC systems. Geometric algebra provides the general mathematical framework for the development of the ideas of multi-linear algebra, multi-variable analysis, and the representation of LIE groups and LIE algebras. There is strong evidence that geobetric albegra can be used to carry out efficient computations at all levels in the cognitive system. Geometric algebra reduces the complexity of algebraic expressions and as a result, it improves algorithms both in speed and accuracy. Thus, our goal is to construct PAC systems solely in the geometric algebra language. The preliminary chapters of this book introduce the reader to geometric algebra and the necessary mathematical concepts that will be needed. The latter chapters deal with a variety of applications in the field of cognitive systems inSpringer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 256 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -The analysis of orthogonal polynomials associated with general weights was a major theme in classical analysis in the twentieth century, and undoubtedly will continue to grow in importance in the future. In this monograph, the authors investigate orthogonal polynomials for exponential weights defined on a finite or infinite interval. The interval should contain 0, but need not be symmetric about 0; likewise the weight need not be even. The authors establish bounds and asymptotics for orthonormal and extremal polynomials, and their associated Christoffel functions. They deduce bounds on zeros of extremal and orthogonal polynomials, and also establish Markov- Bernstein and Nikolskii inequalities. The authors have collaborated actively since 1982 on various topics, and have published many joint papers, as well as a Memoir of the American Mathematical Society. The latter deals with a special case of the weights treated in this book. In many ways, this book is the culmination of 18 years of joint work on orthogonal polynomials, drawing inspiration from the works of many researchers in the very active field of orthogonal polynomials.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 484 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -The principle objective of this book is to help undergraduate students in the analysis of genetic problems. Many students have a great deal of difficulty doing genetic analysis, and the book will be useful regardless of which genetics text is being used. Most texts provide some kinds of problems and answers: few, if any, however, show the students how to actually solve the problem. Often the student has no idea how the answer was derived. This work emphasizes solutions, not just answers. The strategy is to provide the student with the essential steps and the reasoning involved in conducting the analysis. Throughout the book, an attempt is made to present a balanced account of genetics. Topics, therefore, center about Mendelian, cytogenetic, molecular, quantitative, and population genetics, with a few more specialized areas. Whenever possible the student is provided with the appropriate basic statistics necessary to make some of the analyses. The book also builds on itself; that is, analytical methods learned in early parts of the book are subsequently revisited and used for later analyses. A deliberate attempt is made to make complex concepts simple, and sometimes to point out that apparently simple concepts are sometimes less so on further investigation. Any student taking a genetics course will find this book an invaluable aid to achieving a good understanding of genetic principles and practice.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 496 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Intended for advanced undergraduates and graduate students, this book is a practical guide to the use of probability and statistics in experimental physics. The emphasis is on applications and understanding, on theorems and techniques actually used in research. The text is not a comprehensive text in probability and statistics; proofs are sometimes omitted if they do not contribute to intuition in understanding the theorem. The problems, some with worked solutions, introduce the student to the use of computers; occasional reference is made to routines available in the CERN library, but other systems, such as Maple, can also be used. Topics covered include: basic concepts; definitions; some simple results independent of specific distributions; discrete distributions; the normal and other continuous distributions; generating and characteristic functions; the Monte Carlo method and computer simulations; multi-dimensional distributions; the central limit theorem; inverse probability and confidence belts; estimation methods; curve fitting and likelihood ratios; interpolating functions; fitting data with constraints; robust estimation methods. This second edition introduces a new method for dealing with small samples, such as may arise in search experiments, when the data are of low probability. It also includes a new chapter on queuing problems (including a simple, but useful buffer length example). In addition new sections discuss over- and under-coverage using confidence belts, the extended maximum-likelihood method, the use of confidence belts for discrete distributions, estimation of correlation coefficients, and the effective variance method for fitting y = f(x) when both x and y have measurement errors.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 268 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -One of the most striking development of the last decades in the study of minimal surfaces, constant mean surfaces and harmonic maps is the discovery that many classical problems in differential geometry - including these examples - are actually integrable systems. This theory grew up mainly after the important discovery of the properties of the Korteweg-de Vries equation in the sixties. After C. Gardner, J. Greene, M. Kruskal et R. Miura [44] showed that this equation could be solved using the inverse scattering method and P. Lax [62] reinterpreted this method by his famous equation, many other deep observations have been made during the seventies, mainly by the Russian and the Japanese schools. In particular this theory was shown to be strongly connected with methods from algebraic geom etry (S. Novikov, V. B. Matveev, LM. Krichever. . . ), loop techniques (M. Adler, B. Kostant, W. W. Symes, M. J. Ablowitz . . . ) and Grassmannian manifolds in Hilbert spaces (M. Sato . . . ). Approximatively during the same period, the twist or theory of R. Penrose, built independentely, was applied successfully by R. Penrose and R. S. Ward for constructing self-dual Yang-Mills connections and four-dimensional self-dual manifolds using complex geometry methods. Then in the eighties it became clear that all these methods share the same roots and that other instances of integrable systems should exist, in particular in differential ge ometry. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Recent research has repeatedly led to connections between important rigidity questions and bounded cohomology. However, the latter has remained by and large intractable. This monograph introduces the functorial study of the continuous bounded cohomology for topological groups, with coefficients in Banach modules. The powerful techniques of this more general theory have successfully solved a number of the original problems in bounded cohomology. As applications, one obtains, in particular, rigidity results for actions on the circle, for representations on complex hyperbolic spaces and on Teichmüller spaces. A special effort has been made to provide detailed proofs or references in quite some generality.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 232 pp. Englisch.

But where to find out information about the ramifications of IT Training, and in a practical and readable form Mary Clarkson's book is the answer. Developing IT Staff. A Practical Approach can be read as a training manual for IT Trainers, or as a reference handbook, or even as a series of vignettes concerning various aspects of IT Training. The book is a model of clear well-structured writing, obviously a follower of Nietzsche's quote: 'It takes less time to learn how to write nobly than how to write lightly and straightforwardly' . The book is primarily aimed at team leaders in IT departments, but should also be useful in helping people who are not team leaders to understand the learning process for themselves. It provides practical guidelines on how the team leader can get people started on their skill development and support them through the learning process. It is exemplified with real exam ples of life as a technical specialist, and as an IT training manager. Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - This is the second edition of Linear Models for Multivariate, Time Series and Spatial Data. It has a new title to indicate that it contains much new material. The primary changes are the addition of two new chapters: one on nonparametric regression and one on response surface maximization. As before, the presentations focus on the linear model aspects of the subject. For example, in the nonparametric regression chapter there is very little about kernal regression estimation but quite a bit about series approxi mations, splines, and regression trees, all of which can be viewed as linear modeling. The new edition also includes various smaller changes. Of particular note are a subsection in Chapter 1 on modeling longitudinal (repeated measures) data and a section in Chapter 6 on covariance structures for spatial lattice data. I would like to thank Dale Zimmerman for the suggestion of incor porating material on spatial lattices. Another change is that the subject index is now entirely alphabetical.

Along the way, the author describes what we have learned about Jupiter, including what the Jovian atmosphere is really like, and the peculiar reality of the planets magnetic field. The story of the journey to Jupiter is combined with interesting details about Galileos capacities and a graphic description of the solar system, with an episode on how Galileo would judge the chances of finding life on Earth. The book concludes with a look at the future, closing on the Cassini probe to Saturn. Beautifully illustrated and well written, Mission Jupiter shows us space exploration at its best and clearly and vividly conveys the essential science.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - This collection of essays seeks to shed light on the politics of those people who are normally thought of as being excluded from the political nation in early modern England. If by political nation we mean those who sat in parliament, the governors of counties and towns, and the enfranchised classes in the constituencies, then the 'excluded' would be those who were neither actively involved in the process of governing nor had any say in choosing those who would rule over them - the bulk of the population at this time. Yet this volume shows that these people were not, in fact, excluded from politics. Not only did the masses possess political opinions which they were capable of articulating in a public forum, but they were alos often active participants in the political process themselves and taken seriously in that capacity by the governmental elite. The various essays deal with topics as wide-ranging as riots, rumours, libels, seditious words, public opinion, the structures of local government, and the gendered dimensions of popular political participation, and cover the period from the eve of the Reformation to the Industrial Revolution. They challenge many existing assumptions concerning the nature and significance of public opinion and politics out-of-doors in the early modern period and show us that the people mattered in politics, and thus why we, as historians, cannot afford to ignore them. Politics was more participatory, in this undemocratic age, than one might have thought. The contributors to this volume show that there was a lively and engaged public sphere throughout this period, from Tudor times to the Georgian era.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Yet another book on wavelets. There are many books on wavelets available, written for readers with different backgrounds. But the topic is becoming ever more important in mainstream signal processing, since the new JPEG2000 standard is based on wavelet techniques. Wavelet techniques are also impor tant in the MPEG-4 standard. So we thought that there might be room for yet another book on wavelets. This one is limited in scope, since it only covers the discrete wavelet trans form, which is central in modern digital signal processing. The presentation is based on the lifting technique discovered by W. Sweldens in 1994. Due to a result by I. Daubechies and W. Sweldens from 1996 this approach covers the same class of discrete wavelet transforms as the one based on two channel filter banks with perfect reconstruction. The goal of this book is to enable readers, with modest backgrounds in mathematics, signal analysis, and programming, to understand wavelet based techniques in signal analysis, and perhaps to enable them to apply such methods to real world problems. The book started as a set of lecture notes, written in Danish, for a group of teachers of signal analysis at Danish Engineering Colleges. The material has also been presented to groups of engineers working in industry, and used in mathematics courses at Aalborg University.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 256 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Counting is hard. 'Counting' is short for 'Enumerative Combinatorics,' which certainly doesn't sound easy. This book provides an introduction to discrete mathematics that addresses questions that begin, How many ways are there to. . At the end of the book the reader should be able to answer such nontrivial counting questions as, How many ways are there to stack n poker chips, each of which can be red, white, blue, or green, such that each red chip is adjacent to at least 1 green chip There are no prerequisites for this course beyond mathematical maturity. The book can be used for a semester course at the sophomore level as introduction to discrete mathematics for mathematics, computer science, and statistics students. The first five chapters can also serve as a basis for a graduate course for in-service teachers.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 268 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -The field of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has already had a significant impact on the science and engineering of fluid dynamics, ranging from a role in aircraft design to enhancing our understanding of turbulent flows. It is thus not surprising that there exist several excellent books on the subject. We do not attempt to duplicate material which is thoroughly covered in these books. In particular, our book does not describe the most recent developments in algorithms, nor does it give any instruction with respect to programming. Neither turbulence modelling nor grid generation are covered. This book is intended for a reader who seeks a deep understanding of the fundamental principles which provide the foundation for the algorithms used in CFD. As a result of this focus, the book is suitable for a first course in CFD, presumably at the graduate level. The underlying philosophy is that the theory of linear algebra and the attendant eigenanalysis of linear systems provide a mathematical framework to describe and unify most numerical methods in common use for solving the partial differential equations governing the physics of fluid flow. This approach originated with the first author during his long and distinguished career as Chief of the CFD Branch at the NASA Ames Research Center.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 268 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - A First Course in Noncommutative Rings, an outgrowth of the author's lectures at the University of California at Berkeley, is intended as a textbook for a one-semester course in basic ring theory. The material covered includes the Wedderburn-Artin theory of semisimple rings, Jacobson's theory of the radical, representation theory of groups and algebras, prime and semiprime rings, local and semilocal rings, perfect and semiperfect rings, etc. By aiming the level of writing at the novice rather than the connoisseur and by stressing th the role of examples and motivation, the author has produced a text that is suitable not only for use in a graduate course, but also for self- study in the subject by interested graduate students. More than 400 exercises testing the understanding of the general theory in the text are included in this new edition.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - There are two approaches in the study of differential equations of field theory. The first, finding closed-form solutions, works only for a narrow category of problems. Written by a well-known active researcher, this book focuses on the second, which is to investigate solutions using tools from modern nonlinear analysis.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Many books focus on increasing the quality of software through the use of formal methods. However, most books embrace one particular method, and present it as the suggested solution for the software reliability problem. This book presents a wider picture of formal methods, through a collection of notations and techniques. It compares them, and discusses their advantages and disadvantages. One of the main challenges of formal methods is in transferring the tech nology developed by researchers to the software development community. Re cently, we seem to be starting to have a better understanding of the important ingredients of formal methods tools. This manifests itself in the growing ac ceptance of such tools in the software and hardware development industry. Ideally, formal methods need to be intuitive to use (preferably using graphi cal interfaces), do not impose on the user an extensive learning period, and incur only small overhead to the development process. Formal methods are much more acceptable today than ten or twenty years ago, in particular in the hardware industry. Yet there is still a lively contention between different approaches.
