Der Autor faßt in knapper Form alles zusammen, was wir heute darüber wissen. Er versteht es, die komplexen Sachverhalte, die so oft unseren 'gesunden Menschenverstand' übersteigen, Anschaulich und verständlich zu machen. 200 pp. Englisch.

It typically has the reputation of being a boring, complicated, and confusing mix of mathematical formulas and computers. Our goal in writing this casebook and the companion volume (Business Analysis Using Regression) was to change that impression by showing how statistics yields insights and answers interesting business questions. Rather than dwell on underlying formulas, we show how to use statistics to answer questions. Each case study begins with a business question and concludes with an answer to that question. Formulas appear only as needed to address the questions, and we focus on the insights into the problem provided by the mathematics. The mathematics serves a purpose. The material in this casebook is organized into 11 'classes' of related case studies that develop a single, key idea of statistics. The analysis of data using statistics is seldom very straightforward, and each analysis has many nuances. Part of the appeal of statistics is this richness, this blending of substantive theories and mathematics. For newcomers, however, this blend is too rich, and they are easily overwhelmed and unable to sort out the important ideas from nuances. Although later cases in these notes suggest this complexity, we do not begin that way. 264 pp. Englisch.

Using energy as a unifying concept and systems theory as a unifying theme, the book addresses the foundations of such disciplines as mechatronics, concurrent engineering, and systems integration. The systems considered include mechanical, thermal, electrical, and fluid elements; only discrete systems are considered. The reader is expected to be familiar with the fundamentals of engineering mechanics, but no detailed knowledge of analytical mechanics, system dynamics, or variational calculus is required. The treatment is thus accessible to advanced undergraduates, and the interdisciplinary approach should be of interest not only to academic engineers and physicists, but also to practicing engineers and applied mathematicians. The text begins with an overview of system dynamics: classification and representation of motion, constraints on motion, virtual work and variational concepts. It then turns to the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian equations of motion, expressed as differential-algebraic equations. A subsequent chapter treats the dual, or complementary equations of motion, and the book concludes with a chapter on modeling and simulation, including methods of numerical solution. 176 pp. Englisch.

Providing a whole new set of analysis tools, S+SPATIALSTATS was created specifically for the exploration and modeling of spatially correlated data. It can be used to analyze data arising in areas such as environmental, mining, and petroleum engineering, natural resources, geography, epidemiology, demography, and others where data is sampled spatially. This users manual provides the documentation for the S+SPATIALSTATS module. 344 pp. Englisch.

The volume includes papers given at a symposium at Columbia University in 1995, but papers from others not at the meeting were added to broaden the coverage of areas. All papers were refereed. 376 pp. Englisch.

Arguably, no discipline better exemplifies this trend than medicine. It can be further argued that care of the trauma patient is one of the better examples of informatics and the potential benefit to the health profession als who care for these patients. Maull and Augenstein have provided us with a primer on informatics and its use in trauma care. The subject matter is timely and covers the gamut of trauma care from prehospital to rehabilitation. Who will benefit from trauma informatics A simple answer would be anyone who takes care of trauma patients. From a broader perspective, however, at least three examples illustrate how trauma informatics can be used today to exert a positive effect on patient outcome. The first example is care of combat casualties, including battlefield resuscitation, evacuation, acute care, and ultimate return to the continental United States. Current technology is such that via global positioning satellite, a corpsman could transmit to a remote area the vital signs and pertinent physical findings of a combat casualty. Furthermore, the location of the corpsman and the casu alty would be precisely known, and consultation and destination disposition would be possible. The injured person, when admitted to a combat support hospital, could be continuously monitored and additional remote consulta tion obtained. 288 pp. Englisch.

In Volume I, the authors systematically develop the theory of mass transportation with emphasis to the Monge-Kantorovich mass transportation and the Kantorovich- Rubinstein mass transshipment problems, and their various extensions. They discuss a variety of different approaches towards solutions of these problems and exploit the rich interrelations to several mathematical sciences--from functional analysis to probability theory and mathematical economics. The second volume is devoted to applications to the mass transportation and mass transshipment problems to topics in applied probability, theory of moments and distributions with given marginals, queucing theory, risk theory of probability metrics and its applications to various fields, amoung them general limit theorems for Gaussian and non-Gaussian limiting laws, stochastic differential equations, stochastic algorithms and rounding problems. The book will be useful to graduate students and researchers in the fields of theoretical and applied probability, operations research, computer science, and mathematical economics. The prerequisites for this book are graduate level probability theory and real and functional analysis. 540 pp. Englisch.
