It is well known that as process feature sizes shrink, a host of electrical problems like cross-talk, electromigration, self-heat, etc. are becoming important. Cross-talk is one of the major problems since it results in unpredictable design behavior. In particular, it can result in significant delay variation or signal integrity problems in a wire, depending on the state of its neighboring wires. Typical approaches to tackle the cross-talk problem attempt to fix the problem once it is created. In our approach, we ensure that cross-talk is eliminated by design. The work described in this book attempts to take an 'outside-the-box' view and propose a radically different design style. This design style first imposes a fixed layout pattern (or fabric) on the integrated circuit, and then embeds the circuit being implemented into this fabric. The fabric is chosen carefully in order to eliminate the cross-talk problem being faced in modem IC processes. With our choice of fabric, cross-talk between adjacent wires on an IC is reduced by between one and two orders of magnitude. In this way, the fabric concept eliminates cross-talk up-front, and by design. We propose two separate design flows, each of which uses the fabric concept to implement logic. The first flow uses fabric-compliant standard cells as an im plementation vehicle. I also held a Taiwan Canada Glycobiology Workshop after this meeting at the Institutes of Biological Chemistry and Chemistry. To promote glycobiology in Taiwan, I offered a Complexs Carbohydrate & Medicine-2 workshop at the Glyco- Research Laboratory, College of Medicine, Chang Gung University, Kwei-san, Tao-yuan, Taiwan before the MICC-2 symposium. The lecture and poster materials of these three meetings are collected in these proceedings, which are divided into five Sections and two Appendixes. Section I, entitled 'Protein-Carbohydrate Interactions of Plant and Animal Lectins,' provides current concepts of lectin-carbohydrate interactions; classification of lectins, based on amino acid sequences, molecular structures, and lectin affinity for carbohydrates. However, the relationships between amino acid sequences and carbohydrate affinity of lectins have to be more thoroughly characterized. The reviews on animal lectins in this Section explore new areas of lectins. Section II, 'Aspects of Structure and Antigenicity of Glycoconjugates,' provides important information on structural concepts of glyco immunology. 'Glycotope Expression (Glycosylation), Metabolism and Functions,' which play important roles in life processes, are discussed in Section III. First, since analysis without measurement (this is generally not the same thing as what is commonly referred to as 'qualitative methods' or 'qualitative research' in the social science literature) is a relatively new scholarly endeavor, I am striving to enhance its visibility by attracting a wider audience than what would normally be possible with single, narrowly-focused essays published in scat tered journals. Second, several of these essays may, in the minds of potential readers, appear to have been published in places that, if not obscure, are at least inconvenient to locate. Collecting them in a single anthology, then, will help to increase their accessibility. Third, I am trying to suggest, as strongly as I can, that analysis without measurement is a viable intellectual enterprise that ought to be taken seriously in social science. This last point will clearly be en hanced if the whole that follows turns out, as I hope and suspect it does, to be greater than the sum of its parts. All the same, each reader will have to judge for himself or herself the extent to which I have, through the present collection, successfully made the case for taking up analysis without measurement.
