Fogarty International Center for Advanced Study in the Health Sciences, National Institutes of Health, October 30 to November 1, 1972. As part of its advanced study program, the Center conducts workshops, seminars, and conferences on topics related to the biomedical interests of the Scholars-in Residence. Professor Torsten Teorell came to the Center in 1970 as one of the first Scholars. In 1971 and 1972, he spent several months at the Center devoting his attention to contemporary problems in the application of pharmacoki netics to experimental and clinical pharmacology. As one of the founders of pharmacokinetics, Professor Teorell has made many contributions to the field since he first presented a formal multicompartment model for the analysis of drug action and drug metabolism in 1937 (Teorell, 1937). Since the appearance of his original paper, pharmacodynamics, or pharmacoki netics, has become increasingly important as a tool for the study of drug action in patients. The translation of experimental pharmacological findings into therapeutic regimens is today increasingly dependent on ade qua te models of drug action. We have been in close contact with scientists in a number of centers and have helped to organize symposia, workshops, and so forth, in an effort to accelerate their development and make their substantial work known. These symposia in Latin America have been quite successful. The fifteenth will take place in Brasilia in 1977. At the request of colleagues, we are in the process of developing a similar series in Asia. The first very successful symposium was held in Calcutta in 1973. We were most pleased when Dr. Amir Muhammed, Vice Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Lyallpur suggested that we hold a symposium on a topic of great importance to Pakistan, Genetic Control of Diversity in Plants, under the auspices of the University of Agriculture. It is our hope that this symposium will be followed by additional ones in Pakistan as well as in other countries in the Far East. Leadership is quickly developing in the hands of outstanding scientists in these countries, and we appreciate the opportunity to cooperate with them. Neuware - The impetus for the conference held at Bombannes, France in May, 1982 arose out of a Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) Working Group on 'Mathematical Models in Biological Oceanography'. This group was chaired by K.H. Mann and held two meetings in 1977 and 1979. At both meetings it was felt that, although reductionist modelling of marine ecosystems had achieved some successes, the future progress lay in the development of holistic ecosystem models. The members of the group (K.H. Mann, T. Platt, J.M. Colebrook, D.F. Smith, M.J.R. Fasham, J. Field, G. Radach, R.E. Ulanowicz and F. Wulff) produced a critical review of reductionist and holistic models which was published by the Unesco Press (Platt, Mann and Ulanowicz, 1981). One of the conclusions of this review was that, whether holistic or reductionist models are preferred, it is critically important to increase the scientific effort in the measurement of physiological rates for the computation of ecological fluxes. The Working Group therefore recommended that an international meeting should be organized which would attempt to bring together theoretical ecologists and biological oceanographers to assess the present and future capability for measuring ecological fluxes and incorporating these data into models. An approach was made to the Marine Sciences Panel of the NATO Science Committee who expressed an interest in funding such a meeting. Many cryogenic systems demand the use of nonmetallics and composites for adequate or increased performance. Thermal and electrical insulations, potting for superconducting magnets' mechanical sta bility, and composite structures appear to be some of the most significant applications. Research on nonmetallics at cryogenic temperatures has not progressed to the degree of research on metals. Nor can room temperature research be extrapolated to low tempera tures; most polymers undergo a phase transformation to the glassy state below room temperature. Research by producers, for the most part, has not been prac tical, because, except for LNG applications, the market for large material sales is not imminent. There are, however, many government stimulated developmental programs. Research on nonmetallics thus is dictated by development project needs, which require studies orien ted toward prototype hardware and specific objectives. As a result, research continuity suffers. Under these conditions, periodic topical conferences on this subject are needed. Industry and uni versity studies must be encouraged. Designers and project research material specialists need to exchange experiences and data. The publication of 'Microhardness of Metals' promoted the widespread use of this tech nique in studying physicochemical phenomena in various materials. In recent years the micro hardness method has been used most extensively in studying semiconducting materials, and this has necessitated the revision of the monograph with the aim of incorporating new experi mental data relating to both metals and semiconductors. These (GSI/Darmstadt) experiments, whose history, latest reconfirmations, and most recent data were presented in three opening sessions (Bokemeyer, Koenig), show a smooth background of positron (e+) production, as a function of e+ kinetic energy. Superimposed upon this background are four very sharp peaks, of narrow widths (~ 30 KeV) and of clear experimental significance ('' 5 standard deviations). Most ofthese peaks correspond to sharp, essentially back-to-back electron-positron emission in the ions' center of mass. Following the approach of 'supercritical' potential theory (SPT), where the total ionic charge unit Z satisfies Z 137, it has been possible to provide a detailed and apparently correct understanding of the smooth e+ e- background; a coherent description of different facets of this approach, emphasizing the nature of the charged, supercritical vacuum, was described by the authors responsible for the invention of SPT (Greiner, Muller, Rafelski). The conference alternates emphasis between x-ray diffraction and x-ray fluorescence, and this being an odd year the emphasis was on diffraction. Thus the Plenary Session was slanted toward diffraction in general and thin film analysis in particular. The Plenary Session on x-ray analysis of thin films did not just happen this year but really began four years ago with Paul Predecki suggesting a special session devoted to thin film techniques. The session generated a great deal of interest, so Paul suggested that a workshop on thin films should be slated for the 1987 conference. A full day was devoted to the workshop, which was split into a half day on epitaxial thin films and the other half day on polycrystalline thin films. The workshop attendance indicated a great deal of interest in this topic, leading to this year's Plenary Session. The first two speakers of the Plenary Session (B. Tanner and K. Bowen) have been key throughout the thin film activities.
