Diagonal crease in bottom blank corner of front wrapper and first five leaves, else Near Fine, in glassine dust jacket (the dust jacket is chipped along the edges). First Edition. Contains the two Nobel Lectures by Enrico Fermi and Pearl S. Buck ("The Chinese Novel"). Enrico Fermi was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics Enrico Fermi "for his demonstrations of the existence of new radioactive elements produced by neutron irradiation, and for his related discovery of nuclear reactions brought about by slow neutrons". Pearl S. Buck was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature "for her rich and truly epic descriptions of peasant life in China and for her biographical masterpieces". The circumstance of the Nobel Prize award ceremony in Sweden in December 1938 afforded Fermi the opportunity to leave Italy without political interference. Quoting from the biographical memoir of Fermi by Samuel K. Allison for the National Academy of Sciences: During the 1903s "the political situation in Italy was steadily worsening, with the unpopular Ethiopian War, the sanctions of the League of Nations, and the increasing subservience to Hitler's Germany. In 1928 Fermi had married Laura Capon, the daughter of a highly cultured and respected Jewish family in Rome. The enactment of anti-Semitic legislation in Italy in 1938 forced him to think of emigration as a protection for his family, which now included two children, Nella and Giulio. It was also in this year that he was awarded the Nobel Prize 'for his identification of new radioactive elements produced by neutron bombardment and his discovery, made in connection with this work, of nuclear reactions effected by slow neutrons.' Fermi decided to use the trip to Stockholm as the first stage of a journey to the United States, where he had been offered a professorship at Columbia University. The successful accomplishment of this plan ended the Italian period of his career." A more detailed account of Fermi's departure from Italy for the United States in connection with his Nobel Prize is Emilio Segrč, Enrico Fermi Physicist. pp. 96-99.
