Paperback large single poster size sheet which folds into eight octavo pages, very good plus condition, black & white text-photos, minimal edgewear. 8 pp. This pamphlet is part of an exhibition held from 4 October 2018 to 5 May 2019 at the State Library of New South Wales. This pamphlet tells the story of British immigrants made good. The Macpherson family lived in Sydney from 1833. The family photographed their leisured lives, the bush around them, strangers in the street, and the beach. They filmed the world around them before the war changed things forever. In 2014, when the family donated their collection of 688 glass-plate negatives to the library little was known about its contents. Careful cleaning and digitising, meant that the images could be looked at closely in new ways. The expertise of the online community, the detective work of studying places and faces, analysing evidence, putting together fragments of information to reveal identities, locations, times and events meant that the story could start to fall into place.

Hardback octavo, dustjacket, very good condition (in very good dustjacket), black & white photos. 276 pp. This memoir recounts the adventures, the triumphs and the tragedies of a lifelong career devoted to books. He worked for 11 years with Hamish Hamilton, one of London's leading literary publishers. He came to Australia in 1961 to run the local operation of the long established company Collins. During 24 years with Collins Australia, he built the company into the largest publisher and distributor in Australia. Among many innovations was a new genre of Australian-focussed children's books. He also recounts his struggle with Murdoch who eventually took over Collins.

Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. "You were lucky to get a cup and saucer that matched in our house. Or, indeed, a saucer at all, because our saucers were always borrowed by Mum for painting. The purloined saucers were coated with the most extraordinary mixture of deep blues, crimson, purple, and strange greens streaked with ochre. Here and there small, interesting pimples of squeezed-out unused paint grew a solid skin which would burst open again if you punctured it. An opalescent green vase held her brushes, as did a blue and white tin decorated with Chinese figures, and an odd assortment of pots and jars. The brushes ranged from almost a single hair's thickness to fatter than your thumb. Always too on her work table were kitchen glasses full of mysterious liquids, more often than not blue-hued and definitely not for drinking. Hers was a ceaseless passion. When she wasn't formally at work, she sketched. A sketchbook and pencil were with her wherever she went. At Christmas and birthdays, inexplicably to me, she didn't want nighties or perfume or jewellery like other people's mothers. The presents that gave her the most joy were sheets of thick watercolour paper and some new tubes of watercolours; Only permanent colours would do, it was like a litany - Vermilion, Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Aureolin, Rose Madder, Viridian, Cerulean, Cobalt Blue and Ultramarine that used to be made, as she lovingly told us from real lapis lazuli. It was a passion that deepened through marriage to my father, the poet Douglas Stewart, artist and poet each contributing to the other's art." - Introduction.

Reprint ed. Hardback oblong quarto, pictorial covers, very good condition, colour & black & white & a few sepia (brown-tinted) photos, minimal edgewear. Heavy, and extra postage may be requested to destinations outside Australia. 275 pp. This fascinating book is about the secret histories of the Macquarie and Dixson Galleries collectors chests. The Macquarie collectors' chest is an enigmatic wooden cabinet filled with painted panels and exotic treasures, created in Australia for Governor Lachlan Macquarie around 1818. It was taken to the United Kingdom, and left forgotten and unnoticed in a Scottish castle until it was rediscovered in the late 1970s. The Mitchell Library of New South Wales acquired the chest, and its remarkable similarity to the Dixson Galleries collectors chest, acquired by the Library in 1937, raised questions about the cabinets creators, owners and purpose. The chest is filled with more than 150 stunning photos and paintings. This beautiful book tells the story of these unusual chests.
