Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Unsure which of its legacies are true and which to embrace, Texas grapples with an identity crisis. One camp insists that the state's roots in slavery, segregation, and cotton make it southern. Another argues that its Native and ranching history make it western. Outside Texas, southern and western historians who don't know what to make of the state ignore it altogether. In his innovative settling of the question, Glen Sample Ely examines the state's historical DNA, making sense of Lone Star identity west of the hundredth meridian and defining Texas's place in the American West.Focusing on the motives that shape how Texans appropriate their past--from cashing in on tourism to avoiding historical realities--Ely reveals the inner workings of a multiplicity of Texas identities. …

Paperback. Condition: Good. This title is 'Storytelling World/Storytelling Magazine' Award Winner. 'I love a book that gives me what it promises, and this one does: fifty real ghost stories, drawn from a variety of sources and told in as many voices, written so as to simulate the language and delivery of a face-to-face performance, and artfully, delightfully done' - ""Review of Texas Books"". 'Scarcely a page will you turn in this collection of ghost stories in Texas without encountering a disembodied hand or a fang babycreatures guaranteed to shock the shell of an armadillo.Whether you read the tales out loud or spin them around a campfire, youand your audiencewill be spooked. And you'll never again saunter along a dark, deserted riverbank late at night' - Patti Ross, ""San Antonio Express-News"". Some humorous, some haunting, and some just late-night terrifying, these stories, gathered by two favorite Texas tellers, span a rich cultural heritage from the earliest Spanish explorers to the present, from ""La Llorona (the Weeping Woman)"" to the ""Vanishing Hitchhiker"" . Introduced by John O. West and John L. Davis, two of Texas most respected folklorists, the stories include tales adapted by European settlers to their new southwestern settings, more historically rooted legends about such early pioneers as Britt Bailey of the Gulf Coast prairie and Josiah Wilbarger of Austin, and those notorious contemporary cautionary tales known as urban legends. With two appendixes addressing selection, learning, and telling of stories as well as sources and scholarship, ""Texas Ghost Stories"" is a full-service compendium for tellers, teachers, readers, and collectors. Celebrating both the blending and the diversity of Texan cultures through the timeless stories we love to be scared by, it is a treasury for all Texans and for those who really want to know us.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Ibe Liebenberg's first book-length collection of poetry, Birds at Night, explores themes of loss, trauma, PTSD, indigeneity, and familial relationships. These brief, intense poems amplify the sensations and silences of interior moments of crisis and catharsis. A haunting meditation on what keeps us up at night, Liebenberg invites the reader to contend with their own responses to exigent circumstances. Drawing on the resiliency of the natural world in the face of changing climate, birds, wolves, and fire populate the stanzas. Migration and adaptation are the poetic subjects, but they are also the embodied language of each taut line."In whatever tongue they sing," Birds at Night captures the need for empathy and understanding for the natural world.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Since her groundbreaking memoir In My Father's House, which recounts an agonizing break from fundamentalist polygamy, Dorothy Allred Solomon has continued to publish on the lives of Mormon women and the dissonance many experience in connection to fundamentalist pasts. The more Solomon delved into issues of agency, the more she felt her own dissonance and began to look for answers in her ancestral past?those early women she knew only through family stories. Finding Karen: An Ancestral Mystery springs from a decade of research into Solomon's paternal great-great grandmother Karen Sorensen Rasmussen, who converted to Mormonism in Denmark and emigrated to the United States in 1859. Held up to Solomon throughout childhood as an icon of feminine heroism, a stoic handcart immigrant who helped establish Zion in Utah, Karen became equally emblematic of Solomon's own strong-willed determination and of everything Solomon found lacking in herself. Finding Karen is a revelatory journey, twinned with Solomon's own in surprising ways. As valuable a study in recovering history as it is in the need to re-examine family stories, Solomon's retelling takes readers through the twists and turns of discovery/recovery as she encounters them. In doing so, she illuminates not only the risk inherent in trusting even what persists as historic record but also the insights to be gained from assiduous persistence.…
