SUB-TITLE: A light-hearted look at people, places and things PRESENTED BY: Martini & Rossi - Following Martini & Rossi's first venture into sponsorship more than thirty years ago, they have steadily increased their support of both Sport and the Arts in a variety of ways. Martini & Rossi are delighted to be involved in this unique exhibition by Lord Snowdon which follows the company's policy of supporting the Arts throughout the U.K. EXCERPT: From the Foreword - Almost at the risk of stating the obvious, the exhibition and the accompanying book would not have been possible without the remarkable and varied talents of its subject. We are deeply indebted to Lord Snowdon for his enthusiastic and energetic support in developing the concept for the exhibition. I am most grateful to Peter Lyster-Todd, Evelyn Humphries, Jill Westray and Robin Matthews for their invaluable help. Particular thanks are due to Carl Toms, not just for his splendid introduction to this book, but for the part he has played in designing with Snowdon so many of the objects featured in the exhibition . . . Norman Hartnell: 1901 - 1979, was the doyen of British couture for over half a century. "In this volume a group of specialists discuss his role and how we worked, always stressing quality, always studying the character of his customers and the occasion for which the dress was intended. Although usually thought of as the Royal dress designer and the couturier who created his own special world of sequins glittering on rich fabrics, Hartnell also used his talents for theatre designs, simple practical clothes and government-inspired utility scheme during the Second World War." -- from the rear panel blurb; part of his design for uniforms to be worn for the Metropolitan Police Force is still in use today. The book was produced in conjunction with a exhibition of his dresses held at museums in Brighton, and Bath. A little creasing of the book corners with rubbing of the edges and panels.
