Formerly folded vertically. ; Apparently first edition of author's first work. Robert Green Ingersoll (August 11, 1833 July 21, 1899), nicknamed "the Great Agnostic", was an American lawyer, writer, and orator during the Golden Age of Free Thought, whoagnosticism campaigned in defense of (Wikipedia). Ingersoll, Civil War Colonel and the 'leading American orator of his generation,' undoubtedly reached a wider audience through the printed and spoken word than did almost any other free-thought propagandast. 'His cthical indictment of orthodox religion. was the deepest source of his infiuence. and was never really answered by the clerics and others who affected to dismiss it'(J. M. Robertson). Many of his pamphlets were reprinted in England. This is his first published (PMM). Ingersoll enjoyed a friendship with the poet Walt Whitman, who considered Ingersoll the greatest orator of his time. "It should not be surprising that I am drawn to Ingersoll, for he is 'Leaves of Grass' . He lives, embodies, the individuality, I preach. I see in Bob [Ingersoll] the noblest specimen American-flavored pure out of the soil, spreading, giving, demanding light"(Intimate with Walt: Selections from Whitman's Conversations with Horace Traubel, Gary Schmidgall (Editor), 2001, University of Iowa Press, Page 81). "His first published lecture, An Oration on the Gods, appeared in 1872 and was followed in the ensuing years by others in which he continued his attack on the basis of Christian orthodoxy. Among these are Some Mistakes of Moses, 1889, What Must We Do To Be Saved, 1880, About the Holy Bible, 1894, Why I am an Agnostic, 1896, Superstition, 1898 and The Devil, 1899, as well as a number of lectures on literary, historical, and scientific figures. The mark which Ingersoll left upon his age does not derive from any one of these publications alone but rather from the combined effect of his printed and spoken word. He was a great propagandist of the rationalist and scientific view of the relation of man to the universe and he helped to popularize and lend an aura of respectability to ideas which previously had gained little acceptance outside intellectual circles." (PMM, 361).
