Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Revisits the inspiring and heroic stories of the Freedom Riders, through their own words. In May 1961, despite multiple Supreme Court rulings, segregation remained alive and well within the system of interstate travel. All across the American South, interstate buses as well as their travel facilities were divided racially. This blatant disregard for law and morality spurred the Congress of Racial Equality to send thirteen individuals?seven black, six white?on a harrowing bus trip throughout the South as a sign of protest. These original riders were met with disapproval, arrests and violence along the way, but that did not stop the movement. That summer, more than four hundred Freedom Riders continued their journey?many of them concluding their ride at Mississippi?s notorious Parchman Farm, where they endured further abuses and indignities. As a result of the riders sacrifice, by November of 1961, the Interstate Commerce Commission finally put an end to interstate commerce segregation, and in the process, elevated the riders to become a source of inspiration for other civil rights campaigns such as voter registration rights and school desegregation. While much has been written on the Freedom Rides, far less has been published about the individual riders. Join award-winning author B. J. Hollars as he sets out on his own journey to meet them, retracing the historic route and learning the stories of as many surviving riders as he could. The Road South: Personal Stories of the Freedom Riders offers an intimate look into the lives and legacies of the riders. Throughout the book these civil rights veterans? poignant, personal stories offer timely insights into America?s racial past and hopeful future. Weaving the past with the present, Hollars aims to demystify the legendary journey, while also confronting more modern concerns related to race in America. The Road South is part memoir and part research-based journalism. It moves transcends the traditional textbook version of this historical journey to highlight the fascinating stories of the many riders?both black and white?who risked their lives to move the country forward.…

Hardback. Condition: Good. Groom provides a lively and lavishly illustrated history of the team that has dominated college football in the South and has been ranked consistently among the best in the nation. Celebrated author and diehard Bama fan Winston Groom covers the illustrious history of football at The University of Alabama from 1892, when William G. Little introduced the game, to the dramatic 1999-2000 season during which the Crimson Tide made a miraculous turnaround to reclaim its place at the top of national polls. The book's nearly 300 historic and contemporary photographs of coaches, games, players, cheerleaders, fans, artifacts, commemorative items, and vintage game programs immerse the reader in the Alabama football experience. The text and photos capture all of the team's triumphs: Alabama's 1922 defeat of the University of Pennsylvania (a victory that put Alabama on the national football map), the Tide's celebrated upset win over the University of Washington in the 1926 Rose Bowl, the legendary years under Coach Paul W. "Bear" Bryant, the twelve national championships, the heart-stopping victories over the big rivals, and, of course, highlights from the remarkable and record-breaking final season of the 20th century. Keith Jackson of ABC Sports has written a foreword for the book, which also features short essays from author and former UA student newspaper sports editor Gay Talese, former UA quarterback Scott Hunter, actress and former UA cheerleader Sela Ward, the late southern writer Willie Morris, Alabama native and New York Times editorial page editor Howell Raines, long-time Birmingham News sportswriter Clyde Bolton, and UA English professor Philip Beidler. Every Bama football fan--and every other fan who thinks he or she knows something about the sport--should own a copy of this definitive history of the Crimson Tide.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Darkroom: A Memoir in Black and White is an arresting and moving personal story about childhood, race, and identity in the American South, rendered in stunning illustrations by the author, Lila Quintero Weaver. In 1961, when Lila was five, she and her family emigrated from Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Marion, Alabama, in the heart of Alabama's Black Belt. As educated, middle-class Latino immigrants in a region that was defined by segregation, the Quinteros occupied a privileged vantage from which to view the racially charged culture they inhabited. Weaver and her family were firsthand witnesses to key moments in the civil rights movement. But Darkroom is her personal story as well: chronicling what it was like being a Latina girl in the Jim Crow South, struggling to understand both a foreign country and the horrors of our nation's race relations. Weaver, who was neither black nor white, observed very early on the inequalities in the American culture, with its blonde and blue-eyed feminine ideal. Throughout her life, Lila has struggled to find her place in this society and fought against the discrimination around her.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Their Blood Runs Cold is entertaining, informative reading that not only enhances our understanding of a unique group of animals, but also provides genuine insight into the mind and character of a research scientist. Whit Gibbons possesses the rare talent of conveying the challenge and excitement of scientific inquiry. A research ecologist who specializes in the study of reptiles and amphibians, he gives accounts of work in the field that are as readable as good short stories. From the dangers of being chased by an angry rattlesnake to the exhilaration of discovering a previously undescribed species, Gibbons brings to life the everyday experiences of the herpetologist as he chases down lizards, turtles, snakes, alligators, salamanders, and frogs in their natural habitats. With essays like Turtles May Be Slow but They're 200 Million Years Ahead of Us and How to Catch an Alligator in One Uneasy Lesson, Their Blood Runs Cold both entertains and informs. The thirtieth anniversary edition of Their Blood Runs Cold features a new prologue and epilogue, additions that address changes in the taxonomy and study of reptiles and amphibians that have occurred since the publication of the original edition and offer suggestions for further reading that highlight the explosion of interest in the topic.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In April 1735, twenty-year-old William MacGregor, possessing little more than a bottle of Scotch whiskey and a set of Shakespeare's plays, arrives in Charles Town, South Carolina, to make his fortune in the New World. The Scottish Highlands, while dear to his heart, were in steep economic decline and hopelessly entangled in dangerous political intrigue. With an uncle in Carolina, the long ocean voyage seemed his best chance for a new start. He soon discovers that the Jacobite politics of Scotland extend to Carolina, and when his mouth gets him in trouble with the Charles Town locals, dimming his employment opportunities, he seizes the one option still open for him and takes a job as a frontier packhorseman. Soon young MacGregor is on the Cherokee trail to Indian country, where he settles in as a novice in the deerskin trade.Along the way William learns not only the arts of managing a pack train and trading with the Indians, but of reading the land and negotiating cultural differences with the Cherokee - whose clan system is much different from the Scottish clans of his homeland. William also learns that the Scottish enlightenment he so admires has not made much headway in the Carolina back-country, where the real challenges are to survive, day to day, during the tense times after the Yamasee War and to remember that while in Indian country.it is their country. A scholar of the native Southeast, Charles Hudson has turned his hand to this work of historical fiction, bringing to life the pack-horsemen, Indian traders, and southeastern Indians of the early 18th-century Carolina. With a comfortable and engaging style, Hudson peoples the Carolina frontier with believable characters, all caught up in a life and time that is historically well-documented but little-known to modern popular readers. …
