Paperback. Condition: Near Fine(+). Teal quarto, xiii, 147, [2] pages, b&w illustrations; 26 cm. Surui Indians, Brazil -- Folklore. "Unwritten Stories presents for the first time in writing traditional narratives of the Brazilian Surui people, a seven-hundred-member community of Tupi-Monde-speaking Indians. Some fifteen Surui elders respected in the community for their knowledgeable grasp of traditional narrative and the shared past of the Surui group collaborated with Betty Mindlin to develop this collection of narratives, which were tape-recorded by Mindlin and other researchers, including two members of the Surui." "Unwritten Stories begins with creation tales familiar to the entire community down to the present day, which provide an explanation for observable phenomena. The second portion of the book presents elaborate accounts of the deeds of heroes. In the third and most specialized section of the book, shamans speak of their experiences and knowledge of the afterworld and other hidden aspects of the cosmos. Here Mindlin transcribes ritual chants as well as shamans' remembrances of initiation and the performance of ceremonies." "As well as the intrinsic fascination of the stories it offers, Unwritten Stories is a vivid example of the current-day effort by traditional native communities to prolong the existence of their cultural legacy through writing and print. It will appeal both to folklorists and students of traditional narrative and to general readers interested in knowledge that has previously been kept within a small community in oral form."--Jacket. Softcover. Condition: Good. Gently used copy with only minor signs of wear. Internally clean and unmarked, with uncreased pages. Firm, tight bindings. Publisher's note: The relationship between actors and spectators has been of perennial interest to playwrights. The Roman playwright Plautus was particularly adept at manipulating this relationship. Plautus allowed his actors to acknowledge freely the illusion in which they were taking part, to elicit laughter through humorous asides and monologues, and simultaneously to flatter and tease the spectators. These metatheatrical techniques are the focus of Timothy J. Moore's study of the comedies of Plautus. The first part of the book examines Plautus' techniques in detail, while the second part explores how he used them in the plays Pseudolus, Amphitruo, Curculio, Truculentus, Casina, and Captivi. Moore shows that Plautus employed these dramatic devices not only to entertain his audience but also to satirize aspects of Roman society, such as shady business practices and extravagant spending on prostitutes, and to challenge his spectators' preconceptions about such issues as marriage and slavery. These findings forge new links between Roman comedy and the social and historical context of its performance. [publisher] x, 263 pp. Shipped Weight: Under 500 grams. Offering a diverse selection of photographers, countries, artistic movements, and subject matter, the shows revealed a photographic tradition rich in both history and creativity. Drawing from the more than 1,000 images exhibited by FotoFest, this book documents the work of fifty photographers from ten countries. The photographs range from the opening of the Brazilian frontier in the 1880s to documentary images from El Salvador's 1980-1992 civil war to works of specifically aesthetic and experimental intent. Many of the photographs appear here in print for the first time. Wendy Watriss's opening essay provides the curatorial overview for the book in her essay. Lois Parkinson Zamora examines some of the roots of visual imagery in Latin American cultures. An essay by Boris Kossoy addresses the history of Latin American photography in the nineteenth century, delving into the social iconography that evolved from the mingling of indigenous and European traditions. Fernando Castro covers the contemporary scene and the debate over "artistic" versus documentary work. An extensive bibliography by Marta Sanchez Philippe and artist biographies conclude the book.Contents: Acknowledgments Image and Memory: Photography from Latin America, 1866-1994 (Wendy Watriss) Photography in Nineteenth-Century Latin America: The European Experience and the Exotic Experience (Boris Kossoy) Crossover Dreams: Remarks On Contemporary Latin American Photography (Fernando Castro) PLATES Uruguay: The War of the Triple Alliance, 1865-1870 Brazil: The Opening of a Frontier, 1880-1910 Colombia: Medellin, the New City, 1897-1946 Guatemala: The Colonial Legacy, Religious Photographs, 1880-1920 Peru: Modernity in the Southern Andes: Peruvian Photography, 1908-1930 Ecuador: Old and New, 1925-1986 Argentina: A Crossing of Cultures: Four Women in Argentina, 1937-1968 Mexico: Witnesses of Time, 1987-1991: Flor Garduno Guatemala: The Imprint of Time, Nupcias de Soledad: Luis Gonzalez Palma El Salvador: In the Eye of the Beholder, The War in El Salvador, 1980-1992 Argentina and Uruguay: The Modern Landscape, 1981-1991 Brazil: Color from Brazil Brazil: Mario Cravo Neto Colombia: On the Edge, 1970-1994 Venezuela: New Visions, 1987-1990 Quetzalcoatl's Mirror: Reflections on the Photographic Image in Latin America (Lois Parkinson Zamora) Bibliography (Marta Sanchez Philippe) Artist Biographies Contributor Biographies Lenders List Index.
