Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Qualitative methods are used to an increasing extent in market research, evaluation, consultancy, education, and social research. Students in many disciplins use qualitative methods in their reports and dissertations. However, qualitative research does not always demonstrate a chain of evidence wich links conclusions with data. Consultants' reports are often based more on impressions than on presented data. Students spend a long time in preparation of qualitative research, and their analyses are often weak. This book provides practical advice on how to display qualitative data. It also explains why a display of qualitative data is important in a larger methodological context. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This monograph comprises a close investigation of the use of pagan concepts by the authors and redactors of medieval Norwegian royal history, the vernacular and Latin works commonly called kings sagas. The work is structured as a biography of Hakon jarl Sigurdarson, who is portrayed as a staunch pagan, with the various chapters departing from some incident in Hakons biography to consider one of the major categories of pre-Christian religion posited by scholars. These range from divine and sacred kinship through ritual, sacrifice, and temples, to myth and fate, and by the end, effectively all the significant categories have been treated. The various chapters show how authors and redactors put the relevant religious concepts to ideological service, primarily relating to notions of the extent to which kingship should be centralized. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. This volume presents, besides the publication of an Imperial-late antique necropolis outside the Myndos Gate in ancient Halikarnassos, a number of contributions concerning on-going and recent research on tombs and deathscapes. The necropolis outside the Myndos Gate in Halikarnassos. Four articles concern the publication of the 22 monumental tombs and their mosaics, the surveying and drawing of the necropolis, and the inscriptions that belonged to the tombs. In relation to this follows a linguistic analysis of two local funerary terms. Intramural tombs and coffins in Halikarnassos. Two articles shed further light on aspects of death and burial in Halikaniassos -- one through a recently excavated intramural necropolis, the other through some preliminary observations on sarcophagi. The Maussolleion. Two articles revolve around finds made on the site that housed the most famous Karian tomb monument, the Maussolleion. A funerary epigram from Halikamassos. One article scrutinises a funerary epigram from Halikarnassos mentioning a family that moved from Thurii to Halikarnassos. Deathscapes of the Halikarnassos peninsula and Karia. Cukurbuk and Loryma. Two articles concentrate on necropoleis outside Halikarnassos -- a first preliminary report on Cukurbuk, a prehistoric necropolis on the Halikarnassos peninsula, and the deathscapes of Loryma on the Bozburun peninsula in the Karian Chersones. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Because of its rapid growth, ubiquitous popular culture, and global power, almost everyone knows many things about the United States. But often these many facts float about rather freely. For those who need a chronology and orientation mixed with scholarly insight, this is the book you need. For research, for studying, for trivia. And for putting the right events in the right order. The book is a timeline: it organises the political, social, literary, and cultural events of each year of the twentieth century, plus the beginning of the 21st century, with very short essays suggesting how these many events fit into larger patterns. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The essays in this anthology approach literature as communicative structures dependent on media and on rhetorical and narrative modes. Ranging from ancient Greece to the present, the essays are preoccupied with the formal constructions of literature rather than conceptions of particular aesthetic experiences. The approach is similar to the deconstructionist criticism of especially romanticist metaphysics in regarding works of literature as essentially rhetorical artefacts. But unlike the attention towards the aporia of meaning and communicative breakdowns of deconstructivism, they rely on the reconstructive mapping of literary structures as the basis for understanding historical developments and changes in literature. Their investigations in rhetoric and narratology form the backbone in pragmatic arguments concerning the developments in literary history and question historically changeable understandings of literature as a privileged medium for expressing meaning. An anthology of essays that approach literature as communicative structures dependent on media and on rhetorical and narrative modes. Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. This volume is an additional contribution to the description of the mortality of the oldest-old in the post-war era, begun with volume 1 by the same author. While the first publication was essentially a time series studies, the present one is a life table analysis of the same countries in the same period, less precise on timing and more sharply focused on age. Instead of annual fluctuations in 5-year or broader age groups, dealt with in the former, the present study examines mortality by single years of age. To do it successfully, the data are combined into 10-year periods in order to secure meaningful numbers of observations at ages where they are few. This has, in fact, allowed calculation of fairly robust death rates up to age 109 for an aggregate of several countries. Presents a description of the mortality of the oldest-old in the post-war era. This study examines mortality by single years of age. It is combined into 10-year periods in order to secure meaningful numbers of observations at ages where they are few. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The past, we know, informs us. Its texture has been just as real to its time as we feel the present to be for us. And yet, despite its immense importance for establishing and understanding our identity, the reality of the past is curiously inaccessible. This book assembles seven specialists from the fields of history, cultural studies and literature and allows them to debate, in some cases vigorously, the issues of truth and fiction raised by attempts to recreate the past. The debate highlights the formal mechanisms, the imaginative transformations, the ideological commitments whereby history is constructed. The past, we know, informs us. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. God is not dead, after all. Not, that is, if we are to subscribe to a number of trends in contemporary philosophy. This is all the more remarkable in the light of a long tradition in philosophy dating back to the 18th Century Enlightenment, dictating that religion should be regarded with condescension. "The Return of God" marks a renewed determination to enter into dialogue and presents a number of prominent philosophers who take an interest in elements from Christian theology. "The Return of God" discusses philosophy and theology in the twentieth century and in Antiquity as well as gnosis, secularisation, the history of salvation and hermeneutics. A wide range of themes are joined in the effort to try to provide an answer to the question: in what sense can the Judeo-Christian tradition have any decisive influence on philosophy today? God is not dead, after all. Not, that is, if we are to subscribe to a number of trends in contemporary philosophy. This title discusses philosophy and theology in the twentieth century and in Antiquity as well as gnosis, secularisation, the history of salvation and hermeneutics. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The articles in this final volume fall into two main themes, lifestyle and medical paradigms. By using lifestyle as the point of departure for describing the use and users of alternative treatment, research moves beyond the traditional scientific research categories. Alternative treatments foremost function is thus perceived to be the creation of identity. The scientific theoretical concept of paradigm leads the discussion to differentiate between conventional and alternative treatment seen in relation to the basic science or knowledge behind them. How is it possible to characterise an eventual break with tradition? Finally, this volume of Studies presents several documents related to the termination of INRAT; an article concerning the methodological problems connected with the network's research area, a series of abstracts on methodology submitted by network participants, and the organising committee's final report on the research project to the Research Council of the Humanities in Denmark.
