Hard Back. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Ward, Jeffrey - Maps (illustrator). First Printing. 575 Pages Indexed. Light grey boards with black quarter-spine. Top front corner is lightly barely noticeable bumped. No other defects noted to this otherwise As New book with flawless interior text pages. What is more haunting than the specter of a civilization's collapse such as the abandoned temples of Angkor Wat, the Maya cities overgrown by jungle, or the somber vigil of Easter Island's statues? Who hasn't looked at such ruins and wondered, could the same thing happen to us? In his Pulitzer Prize-winning bestseller Guns, Germs, and Steel, the author examined how and why Western civilizations developed the technologies and immunities that allowed them to dominate much of the world. Diamond probes the other side of the equation: What caused some of the great civilizations of the past to collapse into ruin, and what can we learn from their fates? As in Guns, Germs, and Steel, Diamond weaves an all-encompassing global thesis through a series of fascinating historical-cultural narratives. Moving from the prehistoric Polynesian culture on Easter Island to the formerly flourishing native American civilizations of the Anasazi and the Maya, the doomed medieval Viking colony on Greenland, and finally to the modern world, Diamond traces a fundamental pattern of catastrophe, spelling out what happens when we squander our resources, when we ignore the signals our environment gives us, and when we reproduce too fast or cut down too many trees. Environmental damage, climate change, rapid population growth, unstable trade partners, and pressure from enemies were all factors in the demise of the doomed societies, but other societies found solution to those same problems and persisted. What makes one environment more fragile than another? Why do some societies, but not others, blunder into self-destruction? Similar problems face us today and have already brought disaster to Rwanda and Haiti, even as China and Australia are trying to cope in innovative ways. Despite our own society's apparently inexhaustible wealth and unrivaled political power, ominous warning signs have begun to emerge even in ecologically robust areas like Montana. What economic, social and political choices can we still make so that we don't meet the same ends? Huge in scope, clear and passionate in style, this book is destined to take its place as one of the essential books of our time, raising the urgent question: How can our world best avoid destroying itself? Contents in Four Parts: Modern Montana, Past Societies, Modern Societies, and Practical Lessons.

Hard Back. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine Slip Case. Breeden, Mary - Calligraphy and Illuminations (illustrator). First Printing. 64 Un-numbered Pages. No explanation why there are no page numbers, at least to this edition with the slipcase. Gold endpapers. The Paintings are by Gloria Thomas and the Borders for the Paintings are by James Steele Hinton III. A beautifully packaged collation of apocalyptic passages from the Old and New Testaments, rendered in exquisite calligraphy, and uniquely breathtaking paintings create a spiritual vision of Christ's Second Coming. 25,000 first printings. Everything about the book is beautiful, from the unusual and original style of Ms. Thomas' painting to the elegant calligraphic rendering by Mary Breeden of the actual Biblical text of Revelation. It is encased in a lovely slipcover, which seems most fitting, because after one opens this treasure one needs to feel it is put away in something that will hold it safely kept, that will protect its stunning visions from harm, that will keep its gifted author's heart from careless tresspassers. The painting of St. John on Patmos which appears on page 52 and the watercolor study of the Archangel Gabriel at the Annunication which appears on page 2 belong to Greene A. Settle, Jr., who has graciously given his permission for them to appear in this book. The painting of the Angel on Land and Sea, which appears on page 30 and on the slipcase, belongs to Ann Holt, who has also graciously given her permission for it to appear in this book. The remainder of the paintings hang in the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and the authors are grateful to that institution.

And no pug has won more hearts than Wilson, everyone's favorite Taoist master from The Tao of Pug. This year he's back - and he's on a mission to find his new pal Homer a home for the holidays. Wilson the Pug has taught his many admirers - canine and otherwise - some important life lessons. And he practices what he preaches. One crisp winter day while out searching for a good deed to do for the holidays, Wilson comes across a baby pug, lost and alone. Determined to do "the right thing," as it is written in the Tao-te Ching, Wilson sets out to help his new buddy Homer, and together they embark on a quest to find the puppy a home. Their adventure takes them along comical and surprising paths, where they encounter many new friends as well as some unsavory characters who cause big trouble for the duo. Things start to look bleak for Homer until Santa Claus himself steps in to lend a hand. Homer just might get his wish after all . Captured in the same style of charming photography and endearing humor that so enchanted fans of The Tao of Pug, Homer for the Holidays is a heartwarming pug buddy story destined to become a holiday favorite of dog lovers of all ages for years to come." - from the inner front jacket flap.
