It was compiled by sPug Ye shes dbyangs probably towards the end of the eighth century A.D. As it predates the compilation of any Kanjur, many of its citations preserve older versions of the texts cited. In answer to 88 structuring questions it assembles 441 citations from 80 authoritative texts, predominantly Mahāyānasūtra, that might serve as a debate manual. With its scholastic background in the so-called "Debate of bSam yas," mDo sde brgyad bcu khungs represents the system of mahāyoga (rnal 'byor chen po) which is associated with the traditions of sudden or simultaneous enlightenment (cig car ba), Chinese Chan and Tibetan rDzogs chen. In its main part, the publication presents an edition of mDo sde brgyad bcu khungs based on a manuscript from Gondhla, Himachal Pradesh, India, compared with three fragments from Tabo, Himachal Pradesh, and one from Dunhuang. In addition to a short description of the five manuscripts used, the introduction deals with historical and textual problems, including the question of sources and related texts. The Sūtrasamuccaya ascribed to Nāgārjuna, Cig car 'jug pa rnam par mi rtog pa'i bsgom don attributed to Vimalamitra, and the anonymous dMyigs su myed pa tshul gcig pa'i gzhung are discussed in some detail. The volume is concluded by a translation of the 88 structuring questions and an index of the Sanskrit, Tibetan, and Chinese titles of the texts cited, together with notes on selected texts. Gradually, in recent years, scholars have come to appreciate better the importance and the challenge of understanding how Buddhist thought, when transmitted outside of its place of origin, is transformed by the culture of those to whom it is transmitted. This book consists of nine chapters written by scholars who feel it necessary to throw new light on the intellectual heritage of Buddhist logic and epistemology, preserved in various places from South to East Asia. Texts investigated in this volume include earlier Buddhist texts on logic such as the Upāyahṛdaya and the Tarkaśāstra, Dignāga's Nyāyamukha and Pramāṇasaumuccaya, Bhāviveka's Dasheng zhangzhen lun, and various yinming/inmyō materials written by Xuanzang's disciples and other East Asian Buddhist monks. It also examines the polemical responses evoked by Grags pa rgyal mtshan's manuals from Bo dong Paṇ chen Phyogs las rnam gyal (1375/61451) and Go rams pa Bsod nams seng ge (142989), elucidating key points of contention including methodologies for site preparation in funeral rites, visualization practices involving objects representing the deceased, and the relationship between tantric narrative and ritual enactment. Finally, the study analyzes A mes zhabs Ngag dbang kun dga' bsod nams's (15971659) attempt to integrate advanced bardo practices characteristic of highest yogatantra into the yogatantric rites delineated in the SDP, underscoring divergent assumptions about postmortem agency reflected in works classified as yogatantra and highest yogatantra. The objective of this study is to present Mipham's nonconceptual nondualism by analyzing his discourse with regard to the ground (gzhi), the path (lam), and the result ('bras bu). In the initial sections of the book, the examination centers on Mipham's teaching on the core components of the path: view, practice, and conduct. In the first part of the book, Mipham's interpretation of the view primarily as a form of ontological nondualism is examined within the wider context of the path. This discussion presents in detail Mipham's utilization of an array of ascending views in his discourse on the two truths. The subsequent part delves into the interplay between knowledge and liberation that shapes Mipham's soteriological project through the central notions of practice and conduct. This exploration sheds light on how practices rooted in cognitive nondualism facilitate the actualization of ontological nondualism. The concluding part of the book shifts focus to Mipham's soteriological nondualism in which the ground of being taken as the starting point of the path and the result of the path itself are understood to be beyond any distinction or separation. As a practical introduction, it emphasizes Tibetan Dunhuang manuscripts, and lays out specific methods for recording, and in many cases quantifying codicological, paleographic, and orthographic features. The approach unites digital humanities with the examination of original documents to offer scholars a working method for describing early Tibetan writings. The book has two main sections. The first, longer section introduces methods for describing early Tibetan documents and writings, and the second, shorter section demonstrates these methods through a case study of a selection of documents. The first section consists of four parts. The first part concerns codicology in the narrow sense of the description of the physical features of a document, from its materiality to its mise en page. The second part details methods for recording the orthographic and grammatical features of early Tibetan writing, with an emphasis on quantification. The quantifiable features are often specific to 8th to 10th century written Tibetan, but many features are applicable to later writings, and the methods themselves in particular the emphasis on quantification can be adapted to later Tibetan writings. The third part introduces methods for describing the paleography of early Tibetan handwriting. Emphasizing ductus, it puts forward a typology of index letters, and delineates a cluster of features to be recorded in order to characterize a given scribal hand. Part four, "miscellanea", is a very short catchall for those features that fall outside of the parameters of codicology, orthography, and paleography. Examples would be the inclusion in the text of personal names, loan words, and idiosyncratic orthographies that don't fall under existing rubrics in part two. The second section of the book is a case study that demonstrates the methods introduced in the first section. It describes the codicological, orthographic, and paleographic features of a selection of pivotal and fairly well-discussed Old Tibetan documents, including the Old Tibetan Chronicle and two versions of the Old Tibetan Rāmāyaṇa. The documents are presented briefly, and the relevant data is arranged in a table for ease of comparison. In the process, the case study discusses several significant markers for dating documents and writing, from paper re-use to specific orthographic features. An appendix gives a detailed description of the Old Tibetan Chronicle itself as a model for applying our methods for describing manuscripts and writings. This compilation of manually copied manuscripts not only offers unique insights into the local workings of Himalayan Buddhist manuscript production but also, as a collection of Buddhist canonical literature, figures as an important link in the translocal transmission of the Tibetan canon. Both of these aspects are addressed in the introduction, which discusses the features of the manuscripts, the information that can be gathered about their production, their textual contents, and the conclusions that can be drawn about the relationships to other Kanjurs. Considerations of the contents of the Shey Kanjur are informed by a detailed catalogue of the manuscripts, which forms the main part of this publication. This notion is found through various strands of early Mahāyāna sources that, notwithstanding their complex and interwoven development, came to share enough common features to summarize them under the doxographical category of Tathāgatagarbha. The chapters contained in this volume represent the latest research into buddha nature theory that covers a range of topics across major Buddhist traditions. These contributions were originally presented as papers during the symposium Tathāgatagarbha across Asia: The Reception of an Influential Mahāyāna Doctrine in Central and East Asia, held at the University of Vienna in 2019. This symposium brought together academic scholars focusing on religio-historical developments of buddha nature theory as well as traditional teachers and monastics who offered emic perspectives on the relevance of the concept within the context of their own tradition. The resulting volume, therefore, aims at contributing to the overall better understanding of tathāgatagarbha doxography, both historically and in living Buddhist communities. Format 24 x 17 cm (.680 gr ). -------- 355 pages. ********************* "" This book makes an important contribution to exploring the question of how knowledge of Buddhist India is appropriated and negotiated on the Tibetan plateau. It investigates the series of debates between the Rnying ma master 'Ju Mi pham (18461912) and his contemporary opponents from the Dge lugs school in particular Dpa' ris Rab gsal (18401912) that flared up in Eastern Tibet in the late nineteenth century and involved the major centres of Tibetan scholasticism in the almost thirty years of its development. The point of departure of these controversies was Mi pham's Nor bu ke ta ka, an innovative commentary on the ninth chapter of Śāntideva's (approx. eighth century) Bodhi(sattva)caryāvatāra (BCA), a work that the tradition regards as an authoritative presentation of Indian Madhyamaka thought. After the Buddhist religion spread to Tibet, it was this tradition that established itself as the pivotal philosophical system. Not only does its content form the ontological foundation of the Buddhist world view in Tibet, but a correct understanding of it is also commonly accepted as the prerequisite for any soteriological progress. Madhyamaka philosophy was therefore subject to considerable debate among Tibetan scholastics, of which the controversies around Mi pham's Nor bu ke ta ka are one of the most important testimonies. The study engages with these controversies in three parts: Part I ("Context of the controversies") explores the larger context of the debates, both in terms of literary genre, but also in its socio-historical dimension. In so doing, it helps to nuance our understanding of the intellectual history of the nineteenth century, a crucial period in which a tension between Dge lugs and non-Dge lugs scholastic traditions (the "ris med movement") has been often simplistically seen as an important background for the debates. The second part ("Main part: the debate between Mi pham and Rab gsal") focuses on the critical treatises that were exchanged between Mi pham and Rab gsal. Based on this material, the study outlines the key issues of the controversy, which are related to four different passages of the BCA: Topic I concerns the interpretation of BCA IX.1, Topic II that of BCA IX.78. Both of these topics pertain mostly to personal differences in the literal interpretation of the respective passages, and are thus treated rather briefly. In contrast, Topic III, connected to BCA IX.41-49, and Topic IV, connected to BCA IX.2, are both related to fundamental differences in the respective scholastic traditions concerning the understanding of core concepts of Madhyamaka philosophy, which are discussed at great length. For each topic, its respective background is outlined and followed up by an investigation into the dynamic development of the debate, which proceeds by tracing the exchange of arguments across the confines of individual texts. The last section ("Supplementary material") is intended as a complement for the specialist working on this material. It provides a detailed and comprehensive structural analysis of the analysed texts down to the level of individual arguments and makes these structures and the connections between arguments in different textual layers explicit in various overview charts. This book challenges the notion of Sowa Rigpa as a static, centralised knowledge system by exploring past and contemporary practices of medicine in a remote rural area in Western Tibet. Written by one of the few scholars to have undertaken long-term anthropological fieldwork in rural Tsang, it describes transformations that have taken place in the transmission and practice of Tibetan medicine in Ngamring. As the heartland of one of Tibet s main medical traditions, the so-called Jangluk, or Northern Tradition , the site of extreme, destructive reforms during the early Communist era, and also the locus where from the 1970s onwards exceptional efforts were made to revive medical traditions, Ngamring offers a unique opportunity to study the continuity and change of Tibet s medical heritage. The book offers a detailed account of the previously unchronicled Jangluk medical tradition that flourished in Ngamring between the 15th and 17th centuries. As part of their efforts to construct a centralised Tibetan state at the turn of the 17th century, the rulers of Lhasa tried to unify and standardise extant medical traditions throughout the country. However, this book demonstrates that local medical traditions, with their differentiated interpretations of Sowa Rigpa s core text, Four Tantras, persisted and continued to develop their own lineages and practices. Moving forward in time, subsequent chapters document the ways in which these local traditions struggled to survive when Communist reforms were implemented in the region. Drawing on her encounters and interviews with Tibetan amchi, or medical doctors, the author provides a textured account of how both private and government trained medical practitioners have come to learn and apply Sowa Rigpa in Tibet today. Many amchi are challenged by structural frames and keen to take into consideration patients demands, which necessitate provision of a so-called integrated health care that involves extended use of Chinese-style biomedical and sometimes Traditional Chinese medical ideas and practices. The potential of integrated health care to benefit the health of local Tibetans is demonstrated neither to be straight forward nor necessarily the preferred choice of amchi themselves. The book argues that in tandem with the current organisation of the health care system in China, spiralling costs for Tibetan medicines due to limited raw materials and rising standards in industrialised medical production, have transformed Tibetan medicines to become entirely unaffordable for some rural populations. The study s conclusion points to the paradoxical situation whereby Tibetan medicines have ceased to be easily available in the countryside, while at the same time they are consumed on a larger scale in urban areas of Tibet and, increasingly, in a developing Chinese market. It remains to be seen whether, with Tibetan medicine now entering a lucrative global market, it can at the same time remain a viable health resource for those who have cultivated and protected the precious art of healing and the high-altitude environment in which it developed and on which it fundamentally depends. The first volume undertakes a philosophical analysis of Mi bskyod rdo rje s central claims regarding buddha nature after first outlining the major Indian and Tibetan Buddhist views prevalent in his time. The second volume comprises an annotated anthology of English translations of his most important writings on buddha nature accompanied by critical editions and introductions. In our analysis, special attention is devoted to the Karma pa s persistent concern to reconcile two divergent lines of interpretation of buddha nature that had long divided Buddhist thinkers in India and Tibet. One view, presented in the earliest extant tathāgatagarbha texts, takes buddha nature to be an innate unchanging constituent of a human being (at times construed as a true self ) that exists throughout the flux of sentient existence and persists after death. The Karma pa frequently criticizes a variant of this view promulgated in Tibet by the Jo nang founder Dol po pa Shes rab rgyal mtshan (1243 1313) and his successors, who stressed the permanent and transcendent status of buddha nature and ultimate reality. The other line of interpretation, advanced by several prominent Indian Madhyamaka thinkers, takes buddha nature to be nothing but emptiness in the sense of a nonaffirming negation (prasajyapratiṣedha: med par dgag pa). This view was adopted in Tibet by Rngog Blo ldan shes rab (1059 1109) and strongly influenced the buddha nature views of a number of later Tibetan scholars including the fourteenth century Dge lugs pa master Tsong kha pa Blo bzang grags pa (1357 1419) and his disciples. Mi bskyod rdo rje contends that metaphysically austere conceptions of buddha nature that reduce it to a nonaffirming emptiness are wont to disregard precisely those criteria of buddha nature such as the dawning of wisdom and other buddha-qualities that make buddhahood itself a viable and worthwhile soteriological aim. In Tibet, these affirming and negating strains of buddha nature interpretation sharply divided scholars of the so-called Emptiness of Other (gzhan stong) and Emptiness of Own[-being] (rang stong) traditions. In this publication, we argue that the Karma pa s own approach may be best regarded as a middle way between these polarized positions, one that sought to combine the virtues of each while avoiding the vices of taking either as an end in itself. These two volumes are the result of research that was generously funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) from 2015 to 2018 under the supervision of Prof. Klaus-Dieter Mathes. The project was entitled Buddha nature Reconsidered: Mi bskyod rdo rje and the Post-classical Tibetan Tathāgatagarbha Debates (FWF-Projekt P28003-G24). "" *********************** Fav-06-053-03.…

Among the numerous works of Kun dga' rgyal mtshan, the fourth great Sa skya pa hierarch, the one known best by far among Tibetans and Mongols is the Legs par bshad pa rin po che'i gter (short: Sa skya Legs bshad). Highly popular with monks and laymen alike, the collection of 457 gnomic stanzas is a stand-alone piece of Tibetan poetry despite references to some works of Sanskrit nīti literature. In elaborate language the Sa skya Legs bshad conveys pieces of general worldly wisdom in concise maxims and explanatory examples, often integrating concepts from the cultural area of India. Despite the fact that its author was an eminent cleric, only the last of its nine chapters expressly refers to the Buddhist religion. The Sa skya Legs bshad has come down to us in a diversified written and presumably also oral tradition. A text critical analysis based on 14 witnesses for the first time allows us to trace the fate befalling such a non-canonical text in the course of transmission. "" **************** ref fav-06-053-03.…
