Two consecutive volumes of the yearbook of the city of Middelburg, which contain the names of the most important people in the city at the time, including council members, city officials, physicians, judges, headmasters, and firefighters, as well as the local…preachers, pastors, and rabbis. The Naamwijzer for Middelburg was published annually from the early 18th century onwards, and was printed by the city printer of Middelburg, Johan Coenraad Altorffer (1750-1813), from 1801 to 1809. After his death, his company was continued by his sons and later grandsons, who printed the Middelburgsche naamwijzer until 1900. Both volumes include the Middelburgsche almanak, with information on the holidays, tides, and eclipses. The 1832 edition also includes a short work with tables with conversions from Dutch guilders to French crowns. With a contemporary annotation ("Burgemeester en wethouder 1831") on the second free flyleaf of the first volume, and another ("Samüel Kwekkeboom") on the front pastedown of the second volume, ad 5 has been signed by the publisher as proof of its authenticity. The boards show traces of use. Bilateral treaty between the United Kingdom and the government of His Majesty the King of Yemen, presented to Parliament by the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. The negotiations between the governments commenced on 29 August 1950 and ended on 12 October 1950. Some of the terms agreed are: the establishment of diplomatic r…epresentation according to normal practice, the settling of incidents and disputes with bordering areas of Yemen, the undertaking of appropriate measures to subdue any propaganda against either government, and more. The main text (with ten numbered points) is signed at the end with the initials of ambassador Sir Geoffrey Warren Furlonge, the UK's acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the shorter note that follows by "Alkadi" (Qadi) al-Amri, acting Foreign Minister of Yemem. The texts are repeated in Arabic (set in a small Naskh type) before the closing statements. After taking the crown in 1948 Imam Ahmad opened North Yemen to the rest of the world in the 1950s and entered into treaties with many countries. Great Britain had a large hand in the region at that time, controlling South Yemen as the Aden Protectorate, which makes this treaty one of great importance. Today North and South Yemen form the Republic of Yemen. In very good condition. With the date "8 AUG 1952" stamped at the head of the title-page. In a blue paper wrapper with a clear plastic front. With a woodcut British Royal arms on the title-page. Pages: 8 pp.

A political pamphlet in verse celebrating peace and dated less than a month before the signing of the Twelve Years' Truce between Spain and the Dutch Republic. The main poem takes the form of a "codicil" to War's "last will and testament." It recites the various legacies, both good and bad, that the War has left to people on bot…h sides and even to people and countries not directly involved in the fighting. Asher mistakenly lists the present pamphlet as no. 11 in the Bye-Korf series: it was published about six months after the Bye-Korf was banned, but later collectors often inserted it and the associated Testament in place of the earlier Testament, which should have been Asher 26-28/10. The author, place of publication and publisher given on the title-page are all word plays, "Yemand van Waer-Mond" for example suggesting "someone of honest mouth." The STCN attributes the pamphlet with a query to Nierop, who propagandized against peace in one of the Bye-Korf pamphlets (Asher 28/37) but rejoiced in it once it came. Alden & Landis attributes the associated Testament ofte Wtersten Wille to Middelgeest. The poet's four-line verse on the back of the title-page is signed with the motto: "Yet Meer en mocht/Min en docht Niet."A nice view of popular feelings about the Truce, just before it formally took effect. With some tears at the fold of the outermost bifolium and only slightly browned, otherwise a very good copy.l Asher 26-28/11; Knuttel 1584; Simoni W 34; Tiele 751; OCLC WorldCat (3 copies). Disbound. Poems celebrating the truce with Spain (though attributed to a former opponent of the truce), with the Dutch poems in textura types and Latin marginal notes in roman. Pages: [12] pp.

Though signed as 'Hugo de Groot' (the famous scholar and jurisconsult Hugo Grotius (1583-1645), this satirical pamphlet from 1685 is by an anonymous writer using Grotius' name as a pseudonym and using also many other classical names and places (the Parnas, etc.) to denounce the procedures for the nominations and appointments in…the last part of 1684 in Dordrecht of the 'Agten' - the representatives of the Guilds - and the sheriff (schout) of Dordrecht Willem Stoop (1656-1701). The pamphlet gives a lively and very interesting picture of these procedures and difficulties in this year, with the Stadtholder William III, the Court (het Hof) of Holland, Zealand and West-Friesland, the States of Holland and West-Friesland, the burgomaster of Dordrecht Matthaeus van den Broeck and the 'Oudraad (city council), playing their respective roles. A reaction from the Orangist side appeared in March: Aenmerkinge op de Missive van Parnas (The Hague, Gidion Backer, 1685; Knuttel, 12402-3).Untrimmed copy, edges slightly frayed, but overall in good condition.l Knuttel, 12399; STCN 851054226(4 copies); Ter Meulen/Diermanse, 1325; Handvesten en Privilegien der Stad Dordrecht, III (Dordrecht, 1790), pp. 1901-1916. First edition of a biography of General Sir Edmund Allenby (later, Field Marshal and Viscount, 1861-1936). The work treats his Arabian period as commander of the cavalry division in Palestine during the First World War. Allenby made his name in Palestine. D'Arcy Orders (a black-and-white printed helmed coat-of-arms) on the front paste-down and a small black stamp in the upper outer corner of the first flyleaf: "D'Arcy". A charming little agenda 12mo edition, in the original Latin, of Cardinal Roberto Bellarmino's most famous and most popular work, known in English as The art of dying well. Roberto Bellarmino (1542-1621) or Robert Bellarmine, a learned and pious Italian Jesuit had a great reputation with Catholics and Protestants alike. He joine…d the Jesuits in 1560 and completed his studies at Louvain beginning in 1569, then served as professor of theology there until he returned to Italy in 1576. He became professor of theology at the new Roman College and was appointed Cardinal in 1598/99. Though a member of the committee that condemned Galileo's theses, when Galileo was much troubled by the fact that people thought he was under some severe penance, Bellarmino wrote him a certificate stating that Galileo was under no penance whatsoever, but only had signed a declaration that his theses were in contradiction with the words of the scripture. One of his famous sayings was "an ounce of peace is better than a pound of victory".With a small corner of 1 leaf restored, not approaching the text, and an occasional tiny foxed spot, but still in fine condition. The spine label is slightly damaged, but the binding is otherwise very good.l ICCU, TO0E 148488 & NAPE 01308. Contemporary sheepskin parchment, sewn on 4 supports, with a hollow back, reddish brown spine label with gold lettering and decoration, blue sprinkled edges. Two beautiful photographs by Jean Pascal Sébah (1872-1947), one of the most famous photographers of his time, who specialised in Orientalist photography. He continued the business of his father Pascal Sébah (1823-1886), one of the first photographers working in Egypt. Apart from their photographs of important locations in the Mi…ddle East, the Sébahs were known to stage genre scenes, which were used as illustrations in scientific Orientalist publications. The present photographs were likely one of those scenes. They show four Arabic men demonstrating the positions of the raka'ah. The first photographs shows the first and second position, standing and bowing, or qiyam and ruku. The second photographs shows kneeling and the beginning of prostration, or jalsa and sujud.Father and son Sébah rose to prominence because of their well-organized compositions, careful lighting and quality of their prints. The present photographs are indeed beautifully lit and composed, and still in very good condition despite their age. They are wonderful examples of Jean Pascal Sebah's craftmanship. The photographs are slightly creased and discoloured around the edges, but otherwise in very good condition. Housed in a clear plastic sleeve. Two albumen prints (each ca. 27 x 21 cm), signed and numbered in the negative. Pages: [2] photographs.

Medical ordinances and a list of the new taxes on nearly 2000 named medicinal components. As the Habsburgs in the 1770's attempted to strengthen their control over the professional standards and business activity of pharmacists and medical personnel in their realms, the authorities imposed new taxes on behalf of Empress Maria Th…eresa, covering all components of medicaments described and prescribed in the Pharmacopoea Austriaco-Provinciali the official book of pharmacological recipes for the entire Habsburg empire, with editions published almost every year from 1776 to ca. 1822. The ordinance on the subject was promulgated on 25 November 1775 and took affect on 1 January 1776, so the 1776 edition was clearly the first, but the 1790 edition calls itself the second. It is therefore not certain whether the present copy is the true second edition or a reissue of the first. The ordinance (pp. [3]-[8] of the preliminaries) is signed by Christian August Graf von Seilern, Statthalter, and Thomas Ignaz Freiherr von Pöct, Kanzler, and contains seven points, including sanctions and criminal procedures in case of fraud. Trattner was printer and bookseller to the Imperial Court.Foot of spine damaged, otherwise in good condition.l Cf. Blake, p. 24 (1776 ed.). Unrecorded issue of one of the most popular Dutch songbooks of the 18th century, containing songs for weddings, funerals, and other events where people traditionally sang together. Multiple editions of the work were published in the 17th and 18th centuries, but the present has been edited to only include songs that were actually… sung regularly, making it a valuable source on Dutch song culture. The STCN records 9 issues by Reinier Beukelman, which are all undated, but can be distinguished by slight differences in typesetting. Only one other copy has been recorded of the present issue. The work mainly consists of wedding songs, but also includes musical discussions, drinking songs, and even the odd more risqué item. Most of the songs are anonymous, only a few of them are signed with the author's name. Songbooks such as these are also known as mopsjes. This name is probably reminiscent of Mopsus, the shepherd who appears in many of the poems in Virgil's Bucolica, as several songs about him appear in the songbook. The earliest works with songs from Hoorn date from the first quarter of the 17th century. Collective editions soon appeared, with songs from two or more cities, so that it could be sold in multiple locations. The popularity of the work was by no means confined to only these towns, however, but, like the "Enkhuizer Almanac", was read all over the Netherlands. Its small size was both practical and attractive. The original, heavily revised, juridical documents of a case handled by the bailiff of Rhineland, Johan van den Bergh, at the supreme court of Holland, against Pieter Oostenrijk "Broodbakker tot Soeterwoude", who killed the town's blacksmith Cornelis Jansz. Schrier using a knife. Pieter Oostenrijk was banned from Holland and Wes…t-Friesland for the next 50 years. In the Leydse courant of 2 May 1725, we can find and advertisement of the sale of the blacksmith's workshop, so the actual murder must have happened before that date. The documents are written in several hands and signed by Johan van den Bergh, the attorney M. Stipel, Johan Thierry, Pieter Cocq and others. Johan van den Bergh (1664-1755), from 1725 to 1755 bailiff of Rhineland and several years burgomaster of Leiden, was the man who in 1741 bestowed the Leiden University library with the famous Psautier de Saint Louis. In very good condition, spine of the wrappers tattered.l For Van den Bergh: NNBW IV, cols. 116-117. 2 works in 1 volume. Largest edition of one of the most popular Dutch songbooks of the 18th century, containing songs for weddings, funerals, and other events where people traditionally sang together. Songbooks such as these are also known as mopsjes. This name is probably reminiscent of Mopsus, the shepherd who appears in many…of the poems in Virgil's Bucolica, as several songs about him appear in the songbook. The earliest of books with songs from Hoorn date from the first quarter of the seventeenth century. Collective editions soon appeared, with songs from two or more cities, so that it could be sold in multiple locations. This example, containing songs from Hoorn, Enkhuizen, Alkmaar and Purmerend, with Edam added in the sequel, has many odes addressed to the various cities, such as O Schoone Stad van Purmerend. The work mainly consists of wedding songs, but also includes musical discussions, drinking songs, and even the odd more risqué item. Most of the songs are anonymous, only a few of them are signed with the author's name. Multiple editions of the work were published in the 17th and 18th centuries, but the present edition is the only one with a second part, which is also present here. The number of songs, mostly love, wedding and party songs has been doubled compared to previous editions, with both parts together easily containing over 300 songs. The STCN lists two different editions for both parts, both published without date by Joannes Kannewet, which can be distinguished by different woodcut vignettes on the titles page: one with a crown, and the present with musical instruments. Both are equally rare. The wrappers are somewhat browned and rubbed, lacking one of the two closing ties. The leaves are somewhat browned. Otherwise in good condition.l Ad 1: Goovaerts 1387; Scheurleer p. 186; STCN 182888533; Welsh, A bibl. of miniature books, 3181; Ad 2: Scheurleer p. 186; STCN 182884759; Welsh, a bibl. of miniature books, 3184; not in Goovaerts. Contemporary green wrappers with brown ties, the manuscript title and year of publication on the spine, red sprinkled edges. With a woodcut vignette on the title page of both parts, a full-page woodcut illustration in ad 1, and a decorated woodcut initial in each part. Pages: 312, [8]; 312, [8] pp. With (bound before ad 1): [SONGBOOK]. 't Groot Hoorns, Enkhuyzer, Alkmaarder, Edammer en Purmerender liede-boek, zijnde een vervolg op 't voorgaande, verciert met verscheyde nieuwe en aangenaame bruylofts-liedekens en snaakze gezangen.Amsterdam, Joannes Kannewet, [3rd quarter of the 18th century].

Rare and finely produced edition of Giovanni Battista Guarini's (1538-1612) famous pastoral drama Il Pastor Fido, here of special interest for its fine binding by the so-called "Bird's Head Bindery", Amsterdam. The design is exceptionally rich but light for a Dutch binding from the period. The spine compartments show a charming…lozenge with the head of a girl carrying a basket of flowers and the outer frame on the sides shows birds among leafy sprays. The four corners on each board show a fine carnation (t. 28). This Amsterdam bindery probably started its activities ca. 1728 with work for the book collector Gosuinus Uilenbroek (1658-1714). Storm van Leeuwen notes that "the Bird's Head Bindery made many presentation bindings that were definitely or probably commissioned by publishers." The "richness of execution and the Amsterdam publisher" of the present work "indicate that it may have been a presentation copy" (Storm van Leeuwen). In very good condition with the binding slightly rubbed, corners slightly bumped, scratch across lower part of front board. A pastoral drama in an exceptional binding.l Italian Union Catalogue (1 copy); STCN (1 copy); for the binding: Storm van Leeuwen, Dutch decorated bookbinding III, p. 500, 249 (this copy) and I, pp. 436-451. Signed autograph letter from Antony Troyer (1775-1865), an English translator of oriental literature and Indianist, to Joseph Toussaint Reinaud (1795-1867). It gives some account of the research that Troyer and probably also Reinaud were carrying out on the Rajatarangini, the historical Sanskrit chronicle of the north-western pa…rt of the Indian subcontinent, particularly the kings of Kashmir. From 1840 to 1852 Troyer would publish the first Western translation of this great Kashmir historical chronicle in 3 volumes, titled Râdjataranginiî, histoire des roies du Kachmir.Reinaud was a French orientalist and in 1847 he became president of the Société Asiatique, a French learned society dedicated to the study of Asia. He wrote several works on Arabia and Arabic culture, for example Extraits des historiens Arabes, relatifs aux guerres des croisades, ouvrage formant, d'après les écrivains Musulmans, un récit suivi des guerres saintes (1829) on Islamic texts about the Christian crusades, the account of two Arabic voyages to China and India titled Relation des voyages faits par les Arabes et les Persans dans l'Inde et à la Chine dans le IXe siècle de l'ère chrétienne and also Description des monumens Musulmans du cabinet de M. le Duc de Blacas (1828), a catalogue of a famous collection of Islamic art amassed by the French statesman Blacas. With the address of Joseph Toussaint Reinaud on the last page. Album with manuscripts in French and Dutch from the notable Amsterdam literary family Alberdingk Thijm. More than half gives a full account, in French, of a tourist trip to Paris in 1838 by Mrs. Catharina Alberdingk Thijm (1793-1864) and her friends. Without their children they enjoyed the amusement and culture of fashionable Pa…ris. It starts with their departure from Amsterdam, on Monday, 25 June 1838, with a Van Gendt & Loos diligence (stage coach). They changed coaches in Rotterdam at five o'clock in the morning, and at Zwijndrecht boarded a steamer for Paris, still quite a novelty, as the author notes. She makes many interesting comments, for instance quoting epitaphs of tombstones, and at one point noting that the beautiful promenades of the Boulevard d'Italiens and the Rue Richelieu offer no shade, because the trees had been cut down to serve as barricades in the Revolution of July 1830. The account ends with the author returning home after a stay of about six weeks in Paris, and with notes about her intention to present her children with her journal, hoping they will kindly overlook any faults in construction or otherwise.Extra inserted is a manuscript poem in Dutch by Josephus Albertus Alberdingk Thijm (1820-1889), Catharina's son, written at the occasion of a party given in honour of an old aunt, dated December 1878, and signed with the initials J.A.Th.The Alberdingk Thijm family produced some of the foremost Dutch writers of the 19th-century. The author of the present poem, Josephus Albertus was a Romantic poet and must have been one of the children for whom Catharina wrote her travel account. He was the father of the writers Catharina and Karel (pseudonym Lodewijk van Deyssel). In very good condition. Pages: 135, [4 blank]; 4 pp. With: ALBERDINGK THIJM, Josephus Albertus. Collection of 11 snapshots from the early 1920s, likely taken by a British soldier stationed in the Middle East. It is difficult to pinpoint exactly where these photographs were taken, but presumably in Mesopotamia (present day Iraq). Great Britain was actively involved in Mesopotamia from 1914-1932. Prior to the First World War…, a large portion of the Middle East was in the hands of the Ottoman Empire. However, when the Ottomans sided with Germany in 1914, Great Britain sent forces to Mesopotamia to protect the Anglo-Persian oil fields. The British army initially suffered a major defeat, but eventually gained the upper hand and captured Baghdad in 1917. In 1920, after the Ottoman Empire was partitioned, the United Kingdom formally established control in the region under a mandate of the League of Nations. However, the Iraqi people resented this idea and revolted. In 1922 Great Britain and Iraq then signed the Anglo-Iraqi Treaty, in which Iraq was given the right for self-government, while Great Britain stayed in control of the country's foreign policy. This would last until Iraq's independence in 1932.The present snapshots were taken in the early days of British control in the region and depict the atmosphere at the time. They show the daily life of locals, including women collecting water from the river, men standing guard, and the hustle and bustle in the streets. Also included are various group photos of British soldiers and locals. The photographs show some traces of wear around the corners and edges, but are overall in good condition. Kept in a clear plastic sleeve. With 11 snapshots (all ca. 6 x 9 cm). Pages: [11] photographs.

4 volumes. The history of Overijssel, by Gerhard Dumbar Jr. (1743-1802), in the original Dutch. The third volume is divided into three parts, with separate title-pages, but a single sequence of page numbers.
