Paperback. Condition: Fair. First Edition; First Printing. ORIGINAL GPO EDITION. This is the full Treaty of Peace with Germany, Signed at Versilles on June 28, 1919 and submitted to the Senate on July 10, 1919 by the President of the United States. As this 1297 page document was printed with self wrappers, typical of Senate documents, the spine has chipped away and the stitching is loose but holding. This would be an excellent candidate for binding in a more permanent binding. Rear wrapper is detached, but present. Stamp on front and rear cover from library that was a government repository, no other library markings. Scarce in original edition. ; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 1297 pages.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The saga of the Black Sox is the stuff of tragedy, particularly in the case of naive and forever-banished star Shoeless Joe Jackson. The dominant sports cautionary tale for a century, gamblers are back in the box seats. What could go wrong? Paging Chauncey Billups. Source book for the superb 1988 John Sayles of the same title. Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. Henry Louis Mencken (1880 1956) was an American journalist, essayist, satirist, cultural critic, and scholar of American English. He commented widely on the social scene, literature, music, prominent politicians, and contemporary movements. His satirical reporting on the Scopes Trial, which he dubbed the Monkey Trial, also earned him attention. The term Menckenian has entered multiple dictionaries to describe anything of or pertaining to Mencken, including his combative rhetorical and prose styles. Prejudices: First Series (1919), the first of six volumes (published 1919-1927) collecting his short essays, includes Mencken's characteristically scathing yet humorous assessments of various literary and artistic figures as well as more general ruminations on American culture. He opens with Criticism of Criticism of Criticism, a piece deriding contemporary criticism's tendency to lapse into what Mencken terms "pious piffle," whereby an artist is judged by the "rightness" of his orthodoxy rather than his artistic or technical merits. Mencken assaults literary and cultural critics for demanding that artists become Great Teachers rather than dutiful reporters on human nature. Furthermore, a "genuine critic of the arts" must act as a catalyst, triggering the spectator's reaction upon encountering the work of art. First Edition. INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR!
