Bound in black and green cloth with a heavy gilt-embossed illustration on cover and spine. Color illustrated endpapers. Owner signature on front endpape…r; slight soiling to preliminaries; cover edge-wear. Features a 13-page photo essay titled Shades of Night at Washington by Asakichi Kunishige, Known as Frank Kunishige, the Japanese-American photographer was a founding member of the Seattle Camera Club. During WWII Kunishige was incarcerated at both Camp Harmony and Minidoka.A couple photos capture aspects of Suzzallo Library, the best building on campus, the construction of which caused cost-overruns that, ostensibly, caused the dismissal of both Carl Gould, founder of the University's School of Architecture, and the University president, Henry Suzzallo. Gould's design for the library emphasized the triumph of science and learning over age-old religious hokum. As an example, watermarks of early printers are featured in stained glass in lieu of Christian iconography; statues of scientists and thinkers occupy niches in lieu of saints. Such subversion didn't sit well in Olympia, where the state budget was doled out. An elaborate graphic production, evoking an art deco aesthetic to a high degree. Credit goes to art director Floyd Flint. The embossed gilt bell tower on the front cover is so substantial as to figure as an architectural flourish. Among the highlights of the year was a performance by Sergei Rachmaninoff, presented as series of concerts produced by the Women's Federation. In sum, a striking annual in well-preserved condition. . Earl F. Campbell, Frank A. Kunishige (illustrator).
