Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe (1901-79) was a renowned bird artist, but also illustrated numerous other books on wildlife and rural life, including six books by Henry Williamson from Tarka the Otter (1932 edition) onwards, and later many Ladybird books. He also illustrated Alison Uttley and Ian Niall, who wrote the introduction to this title and published the biography of Tunnicliffe in 1980. Niall (1916-2002), who sometimes wrote under his real name of John McNeillie, was a prolific rural life writer and novelist from Galloway.
