Hardcover. First Edition. Copy #5 of 500 numbered and SIGNED copies of this National Book Award winner. In addition to being signed on the limitation page, the author has INSCRIBED this copy on both the title page and the blank page facing it to composer Aaron Copland: "Presented to Aaron Copland on/the occasion of the tribute paid/to him on his 70th birthday by/the friends of the MacDowell/Colony/T.N.W." On the title page: "For Aaron/from/Thornton/with a long admiration and/indebtedness and affection./October 1970." Wilder has drawn a red box around "Aaron" and a blue box around "Thornton" with colored pencils. Copland, one of America's greatest composers and celebrators of the American spirit, had much in common with Wilder regarding themes and subjects. Copland composed the music for the 1940 film adaptation of OUR TOWN, for which he was nominated for two Academy Awards. The film itself was nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture, but did not win any. After first meeting with Copland to discuss the project, Wilder said of him, "He's a very likeable fella." Wilder wrote most of OUR TOWN at the MacDowell Colony where Copland also wrote much of his masterwork, APPALACHIAN SPRING. An Association Copy of the first magnitude. Mild sunning to the spine. Still Fine in glassine and slipcase, as issued.

AARON COPLAND (1900-1990). Copland was an American composer, conductor, critic, writer, teacher, and pianist. ALS. 1 pg. 6 x 8. February 4, 1965. N.p. An autographed letter signed Aaron to Dear Jim: Delighted to get your note and to hear you live at Leverett. From March 11-20th Ill be at the Dana Palmer House 15 Quincy St. Give me a ring any morning and we can get together. Unfortunately, most evenings are taken up with work at W.G.B.H. Aaron Copland was referred to by his peers and critics as the Dean of American Composers for how his open, slowly changing harmonies came to symbolize the sound of American music. His most famous works include the ballets Appalachian Spring, Billy the Kid and Rodeo, Fanfare for the Common Man, and Symphony Number Three. Later in life, he was known to tour as a guest conductor of orchestras in the United States and United Kingdom and for guest television appearances to bring orchestras to the masses. This is most likely what brought him to Boston and their station WGBH. The Dana Palmer House in which he stayed, also known as Dana-Peabody House, was used as Harvard's first astronomical observatory, and it was later the residence of noted Harvard faculty like George Herbert Palmer, Andrew Preston Peabody, and William James. Today, Dana Palmer houses Harvard's Department of Comparative Literature. The letter was written on Coplands official stationery: Memo from AARON COPLAND and is in excellent condition.

In fine condition. Referred to by his peers and critics as "the Dean of American Composers", American composer and conductor Aaron Copland is best known for the works he wrote in the 1930s and 1940s which came to encompass the vast American landscape and pioneer spirit. While Copland's earliest musical influences included Chopin, Verdi, and Debussy, his later work employed the use of "jazzy elements" as well as experimentation with Schà nberg's twelve-tone system, resulting in two major works, the Piano Quartet (1950) and the Piano Fantasy (1957).
