Two scarce postwar cookery books, one detailing an array of cooking methods and the other offering the latest recipes across the world. The ABC of Cookery, and Vogue's Contemporary Cookery, written by Doris Lytton Toye and edited by Evelyn Forbes. Two scarce postwar cookery books, published between 1945-1947.In the publisher's original pictorial paper wraps. Toye contains seven pictorial advertisement plates to the front of the book, and six to the rear of the book. Both volumes contain numerous in-text illustrations.Despite both these cookery books being written at the end of the Second World War, both were written for different purposes. The ABC of Cookery offers readers highly useful tips for how to cook and preserve different types of food, while Vogue's Contemporary Cookery offers readers new and intriguing recipes which were in fashion at the time, including chocolate potato cake and Jamaican junkets. In the publisher's original pictorial paper wraps.Externally, mostly smart, with the odd small mark to the extremities, lighter to Vogue. Fading to the extremities, lighter to Vogue. Rubbing to joints of Vogue, and signs of edgewear, a little heavier to ABC with a small chip to bottom edge, head of spine and front wrapper joint. The occasional small crease to ABC wraps. Front wrapper of ABC loose. End papers are generally bright and clean, with slight wear to front end paper hinges and the odd small spot to pastedowns of ABC. Minor browning to end paper edges of Vogue. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are clean, with age toning. Good. book.
