Hardcover. First edition (& second printing). Non-fiction: true crime essays. As originally printed, the first edition contained an essay examining the high-profile murder trial of Dr. John Bodkin Adams. Because Dr. Adams had been acquitted, the essay was deemed potentially libelous. Fearing legal action, the publisher (The Bodl…ey Head) halted the release and suppressed the run. Only about 50 copies of this ''first state'' version exist: to salvage the printing, the controversial essay on Dr. Adams was completely removed. In its place, Ambler substituted a newly written essay about James Hanratty, the ''A6 Murderer'' who had been controversially hanged the previous year. This is the second state with the James Hanratty essay. Fine copy in an almost fine (bright, unfaded pictorial) dustjacket with a little edge wear.
