Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. This book is in Very Good condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The book is in generally clean condition . There is a wrinkle to cloth of book cover that appears to be a publishing error - the wrinkle travels from front to back of the book cover - but doesn't affect the book in the slightest. T…here is a black smear to the front cover of the book. The text pages are generally clean, though there are occasional spots of foxing. The front inner spine hinge has cracked. There is a previous owner's inked name and note on the front endpaper, and an ink stamped name and address on the front pastedown page. "In 1915 Grelling wrote the anti-war book entitled J'Accuse, condemning the actions of Germany in causing the war through its foreign policies. The book was banned in Germany but was translated into many languages and enjoyed huge sales. Printed excerpts in the form of propaganda leaflets from its text were dropped by aircraft of the British Expeditionary Force into the Imperial German Army's trenches in France before the Battle of the Somme in 1916 in an endeavour to undermine the fighting morale of the German troops situated there. The German edition is prefaced by the following note : "The book J'Accuse, written by a German patriot, and entrusted to me, is herewith presented to the public. "I regard this work as an act which can only confer a blessing on the German people and on humanity, and I accordingly assume responsibility for its publication. "Lausanne, April 20th, 1915." "DR. ANTON SUTER. A further note is added in the following terms : "Having regard to the situation arising from the war and the conditions of the censorship, certain passages in the manuscript have for the present been omitted. These passages are indicated by blank spaces." In the present translation the censored passages have been indicated in the same way. The very few explanatory footnotes added in the course of translation are indicated by square brackets. I desire to express my indebtedness to Mr. T. Lindsay for his assistance in the work of revision and correction of proofs. July, 1915. A.G.

Doran, a new edition was then released by Grosset & Dunlap, a reprint house. This is the first edition of the latter. Book is fine. Uncommon original DJ is VG… with an open chip on front edge and a small closed tear on rear edge. In 1915, the German pacifist Richard Grelling wrote a book titled J'Accuse! by a German, in which he condemned the actions of the German Empire leading up to WWI.
