EERSTE ATJEH EXPEDITIE "Kaart van het terrein des oorlogs in het rijk Atjeh of Achin nabij de hoofd-plaats". Lithografie vervaardigd door J. Smulders & Co en uitgegeven in 1873 door A.C. Kruseman. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm.: 46 x 67 cm. Nederland voerde een koloniale oorlog met het aanvankelijk oogmerk om de zeevaart door Straat Malakka te beveiligen tegen zeeroverij uit Atjeh. Omdat het overgrote deel der Atjehers weigerden zich aan de Nederlanders te onderwerpen, werd het doel het sultanaat Atjeh net als de andere buitengewesten van Nederlands-Indië onder Nederlands koloniaal gezag te brengen en te houden. De Nederlandse expeditiemacht, onder leiding van generaal-majoor Köhler, arriveerde op 5 april 1873 voor de westkust van Atjeh met een vloot van zes oorlogsschepen en transportschepen. (Het eskader zien we op de kaart voor de kust liggen: de schepen Marnix, Coehoorn, Sumatra, Soerabaja en Citadel van Antwerpen.) Op 8 april probeerden ze met sloepen aan land te gaan, maar werden meteen aangevallen door honderden Atjehse strijders. Deze aanval werd afgeslagen, maar met tientallen doden en gewonden aan beide zijden. Na deze moeizame landing besloten de Nederlanders een permanent bivak op te slaan op het strand zelf. Dit strand-bivak diende als uitvalsbasis voor verdere operaties landinwaarts. Vanuit dit kamp aan de kust probeerden ze vervolgens op te rukken richting de kraton (het paleis) van de sultan van Atjeh, maar dit lukte niet door de felle Atjehse tegenstand. De Eerste expeditie naar Atjeh werd een complete mislukking. Generaal Köhler sneuvelde tijdens de verovering van de moskee (de Missigit, rechtsonder op de kaart) en uiteindelijk moesten de Nederlandse troepen in mei 1873 de expeditie afbreken en zich terugtrekken op hun schepen. De Atjehoorlog eindigt uiteindelijk pas na 30 jaar hevige strijd. Prijs: Euro 750,-.…
