Jacket show toning to spine and some light wear and chipping to edges. Very good. Archibald MacLeish was an American writer and poet who fought in World War I. MacLeish believed that the end of the war marked the beginning of the new world and much of his earlier work focused around understanding the changing world around him. The elegiac poem Actfive explores the challenges MacLeish was facing after the loss of peace due to World War II. In this collection Actfive is placed alongside some twenty shorter pieces.

In addition to winning three Pulitzer Prizes, MacLeish was commissioned by… the NEW YORK TIMES to write a poem to celebrate the Apollo 11 moon landing, which he entitled "Voyage to the Moon" and which appeared on the front page of the 21 July 1969 edition of the paper. Interesting copy. Theodore Spencer, [1902-1949] was an American poet & academic. He graduated from Princeton University in 1923, & a Ph.D from Harvard University in 1928. He then taught there, from 1927 to 1949. He was appointed lecturer in English literature at Cambridge University, England, in 1939. In 1942, Spencer gave the Lowell lectures on Shakespeare, published as Shakespeare and the Nature of Man, his most important work. Spencer also published essays, short stories, and poetry.
