Add to basketOriginal Wraps. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket, as Issued. First UK Paperback Edition. Penguin Catalogue No. 896. A first printing of the first UK paperback edition, published in September 1953. The book, which was the final published novel by Virginia Woolf, was originally published in hardback by the Hogarth Press in 1941. ***Very good in the iconic Penguin orange and white striped card covers. The covers are quite clean, but do have some marks and rubbing commensurate with age and handling over the last 72 years. There is also some uneven browning to the covers. However, there are no tears or creases - just slight rubbing at the base of the spine - and no reading creases to the spine which is straight and not rolled. The spine also remains unbrowned - just slightly faded (please see scans). Internally also very good with no inscriptions or annotations. Internal pages clean, although the paper stock is tanned. A couple of top page corner tips slightly creased. No dustwrapper as issued (the Penguin editions from this period were not issued with a dustwrapper). ***152 pages plus a 6pp publisher's catalogue at the back of the book, plus a single advert printed on the inside cover. 180mm x 110mm. ***'"Between the Acts" is the final novel by Virginia Woolf. It was published shortly after her death in 1941. Although the manuscript had been completed, Woolf had yet to make final revisions (as stated by Leonard Woolf in a Note at the beginning of the book). The book describes the mounting, performance, and audience of a play at a festival in a small English village, just before the outbreak of the Second World War. Since the play is inside the story, much of the novel is written in verse, and it is thus one of Woolf's most lyrical works. Because of its focus on theatrical performance, it has been discussed as theatre-fiction, which Graham Wolfe explains as "referring to novels and stories that engage in concrete and sustained ways with theatre as artistic practice and industry."' (Wiki)***A first printing of the first UK paperback edition in very good condition considering its age and the fragility of production. It is unusual now to find Penguin books from this period in such nice condition. The accompanying photo scans show four other Penguin editions of books by Virginia Woolf which we have also listed on ABE Books, including a scarce wartime first printing of "A Room of One's Own". ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This is the final novel by Virginia Woolf, published in 1941 shortly after her suicide. It is a book laden with hidden meaning and allusion, describing the mounting, performance, and audience of a festival play in a small English village just before the outbreak of the Second World War. The novel was published by The Folio Society in 1974, and it features beautiful lithograph illustrations by Gillian Barlow and an introduction by Quentin Bell. This edition is a first edition and is in very good condition. The story is set in a country house in the heart of England, where the villagers are presenting their annual pageant as World War II looms. The story takes place on a June day in 1939 at Pointz Hall, the Oliver family s country house in the heart of England. The novel is one of Woolf's most lyrical works, with much of it written in verse. It has been discussed as theatre-fiction, referring to novels and stories that engage in concrete and sustained ways with theatre as artistic practice and industry. The book describes the mounting, performance, and audience of a play at a festival in a small English village, just before the outbreak of the Second World War.

An attractive copy despite issues.
