Bronze Age cairns and barrows and Iron Age grave fields are the most conspicuous ancient monuments of southern Scandinavia. There is a religious concept behind all these prehistoric graves. At some sites there are even remains of ancient rites which can be interpreted as being connected to funerals and the cult of the dead. This volume is an analysis of the meaning of the various exterior shapes of the prehistoric graves such as shone ships, bauta stones and circular constructions.
