Alexander Ross t…ranslated the Koran for the first time in English in 1649 based on the inaccurate and poor translation of André du Ryer in 1647. This 1734-Sale's Koran is widely regarded as the first accurate introduction of the Koran to the Western world in English, translated directly from Arabic. Condition: Contemporary/original (?) boards, rebacked with new spine, gilt decorated motifs to spine compartments, morocco title label, early ownership inscription. Marginal foxing in first and last few pages, maps and charts in excellent, bright condition, internally clean and unmarked texts. Provenance-- 1) Bookplate of Thomas Edwards Freeman Esq, most likely the British politician of that name who sat in the House of Commons from 1768 to 1780. 2) Early inscription in ink of Richard Freeman, with a date of Jan 15th 1736, less than two years of the book being printed. 3) bookplate of The Heathcote baronetcy of Hursley in the County of Southampton, depicting the coat of arms. This baronetcy was created in the Great Britain on 16 August 1733 for William Heathcote. A complete, collector's copy in beautiful binding with contemporary/original (?) covers, internally clean pages and striking, early provenance.

Rebound in a 19th century half calf, top board detached, with a closed split at page 259 at bottom edge (no loss), other very minor marginal paper loss on a couple of pages, in no way interfering with any text, margins very good, part of the tables and up to page 12 are a little browned, this has the extra original 1649 endpaper as pointed out above. A copy of this scarce 1st English edition in excellent condition. REF: Wing K747 & ESTC R200452. *The copies of this octavo edition (a quarto 18 cm high copy was printed the same year no precedence of publication are confirmed) are scarce with only 5 copies located in British academic libraries. Interestingly all copies located state 12 pages of the "Admonition" not 15 as we have counted in this copy? And the 4to edition has different pagination points. NOTE* It was the first, albeit indirect, English translation of the Quran/Koran/Alcoran, significantly impacting European understanding of Islam at the time.

First edition. The French scholar, Jean Gagnier ( Paris 1670-Oxford 1740) was professor of Oriental languages in Oxford and the predecessor of Edward Pocock. In 1723, already he published the life of the Prophet by Ismail Abu al-Fida [ Balanga p. 142] in Arabic and Latin. As most of his contemporaries could read neither Arabic nor Latin, they impressed upon Gagnier to publish a French language version of the description of the life of th *+ e Prophet. He published this work nine years later in a completely newly-designed version. The historical biography which is really excellent, describes the life of the Prophet with all its fables and wonders. For the first time, the author used good, albeit more recent source material and quotes the Arab authors for the most part word by word. His translations are brilliant and for many years his book was held to be the best biography of the Prophet. Many later authors made references to it. Bibliographic references: Enay 33. Quarto, bound in full contemporary speckled calf with morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, elaborate gilt tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, sympathetically… rebacked, gilt turn-ins, all edges stained red. Illustrated with an engraved folding map of Arabia, a folding plan of the Temple of Mecca, and three genealogical plates. In very good condition with some wear to the extremities and small losses to the leaves. From the library of American author Eugene Field with his bookplate tipped to the front free endpaper and an inscription on the rear free endpaper from his son Eugene Field II, stating that the book came from his father's library, dated 10 Sept. 1922. An exceptional example. For Muslims, Islamâs sacred scripture can only truly be read in Arabic, for it is the literal, revealed word of God. Among English translations, however, George Saleâs remains an important landmark. âAs a translator, Sale had the field almost entirely to himself. The only full translation of the Koran in any modern language previously published was the despicable French version by Du Ryer, issued in 1649. A very poor English rendering of Du Ryerâs from French was issued by Alexander Ross in London in the same year⦠Saleâs translation is remarkably accurate. Throughout he has made full use of native commentators, as regards both the interpretation of the text and its illustration in the notes⦠His version remains the best [translation] in any languageâ (DNB).

Extensive documented pro…venance. Includes a custom black morocco covered solander box with grey felt lining. FULL TITLE The Alcoran of Mahomet, translated out of Arabique into French; by the Sieur du Ryer, Lord of Malezair, and resident for the King of France, at Alexandria. And newly Englished, for the satisfaction of all that desire to look into the Turkish vanities. BOOK INFO & IMPORTANCE Translated into English from the French of Andre du Ryer. The work concludes with: "A needfull Caveat or Admonition for them who desire to know what use may be made of, or If there be danger in reading the Alcoran, by Alexander Ross" (1591-1654, to whom many attribute the English translation). The Quran of Alexander Ross ultimately served two purposes. His first and original purpose was to expose what he deemed the false teachings of Islam. He believed Islam was a physical threat and a spiritual deception needing attention. The second purpose was, via the preface, to indirectly attack the new Puritan Commonwealth government and their considerations of censorship due to their fear of printing Qurans on English soil. Published in 1649 by an unstated publisher in London (but certainly under the direction of Alexander Ross). First edition of the Quran in the English language. Modern recasing in full black morocco with the original 17th century board leather laid down. Boards with double gilt filets paneling encompassing a smaller, centralized rectangle comprised of triple gilt filets with a gilt tooled floral emblem in each corner. All edges gilt. Small octavo, 6 3/8" x 4.25". Collated and complete: [20], 405 (but really 409 due to an uncorrected printer error), [15]. An engraved title page or frontispiece from Ovid's Metamorphoses has been added to the preliminary leaves. PROVENANCE 1. Earliest entry dated May, 1738. 2. John Read Wortham, May 20, 1792, the gift of Hunt, esquire 3. Thomas Rogerson (1743 - 1820) M. P. (Member of British Parliament) from Lancashire, England bought it in 1799 from Mr. Wortham. On the leaf following his signature, Rogerson wrote this poem: "In virtues path may you and I be found Often we there would go but often miss the ground How is it that we slip so soon aside Not willing when we are right there firmly to abide Ready to take your hand and seek the happy He Even these pleasures love though on us some smile may And if you wish to stop my Partner for to day Dare you look up and there my name youll see" 4. St. Catharine Reference Library received it as a gift from Miss Wheatcroft on August 3rd, 1963. A note states that it is "not to be taken out" (of the reference room library). CONDITION REPORT The book is in Good to Very Good antiquarian condition. Refreshed endpapers. Recased in full black morocco with the original board leather laid down. Exterior: square spine, firm hinges and joints, sharp corners. Significant wear to and discoloration of the original board leather after centuries of use. Blackened in many areas, suggesting a close brush with fire. Interior: Blank flyleaves with quite a lot of writing and former owner inscriptions dating back to 1738. Title page with writing and page 29 has a single line of text underlined. No marginalia. Grubbiness and wear to the original retained blanks. Pages have been trimmed and are unevenly tanned: pages range from off white to mostly toned to browned in multiple patches. No water dampening. No stickers or bookplates. From page 339 to final endpaper there is minor marginal worming not affecting text. Quite a few numbering issues by the printer, as called for. Signs of handling - bent page corners, creases, feathered/chipped margins, some small margin edge tears, thumbing and a few smudges. One gutter has some sti.

La premier ouvrage, La Cour de St. Germain raconte la chronique scandaleuse de la Cour d'Angleterre depuis son arrivée à Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Jacques II Stuart, duc d'York (Londres 1633 - Saint-Germain-en-Laye 1701) accède au trône d'Angleterre en 1685 à la suite de son frère Charles II mort sans descendance. Sa conversion au catholocisme, les faveurs accordées à l'église catholique à son avènement, l'accueil d'un nonce apostolique à Londres et la naissance d'un héritier mâle en 1688 (avec la perspective d'une dynastir catholique) décident les aristocrates et les évêques à conspirer contre lui. Ces derniers font appel à Guillaume d'Orange, gendre du roi, qui débarque en novembre 1688 et entraîne son exil en France. Il sera accueilli par son cousin Louis XIV et logé au château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Selon les historiens Jacques II est décrit comme un tyran dont le règne fut une aberration dans l'histoire britannique. Jacques II tentera de reprendre son trône en 1690, sans succès. Jacques II vit au château de Saint-Germain (à partir de janvier 1689) avec son épouse Marie et des plus fidèles partisans, gens du peuple ou nobles, catholiques ou protestants, soit au moins 50 ou 60 000 personnes). Les plus riches courtisans anglais vont habiter à Paris. Une grande majorité d'entre eux doit cependant travailler pour subsister. Beaucoup sont soldats, les plus chanceux (ou riches) deviennent commerçants en tous genre, d'autres sont en peine dans les rues de Paris, sans avenir. Louis XIV était avec sa cour dans son château de Versailles. Beaucoup de moyens financiers ont été mis à la disposition de la cour d'Angleterre à St-Germain. L'exil de Jacques II en France correspond à l'implantation en France de la franc-maçonnerie, fondée en Écosse en 1598. Le texte est essentiellement tourné à l'encontre de Louis XIV et sa cour fortement critiqués. Les personnages sont nommés et peu épargnés. L'auteur y a ajouté des aventures amoureuses bien difficiles à vérifier aujourd'hui. En voici un extrait qui donne le ton général : "Le Marquis (de Seignelay) qui était de belle humeur, conta l'histoire des intrigues amoureuses de la Marquise de Pouris à sa femme et lui dit, que cette débauchée disait qu'il n'y avait point de véritable plaisir, que dans les désordres de l'amour. C'est pourquoi elle avait lié un commerce dangereux avec le Chancelier Jeffrey de Londres, où cette vieille mégère lui fournissait les plus belles filles de la ville, qu'il présentait aux plus grands seigneurs pour les divertirs. Elle a fait se métier (proxénète), reprit la Marquise en riant, quand sa figure n'a plus été propre à rien." Cet ouvrage a reparu en 1729 sous le titre Les Galanteries de la Cour de Saint-Germain. On ne connait pas son auteur. Il fait partie des livres saisis à Paris entre 1678 et 1701 (A. Sauvy, n°548 "roman satyrique des amours de Jacques II d'Angleterre et de sa femme (et ses amants"). Le deuxième ouvrage, L'Alcoran de Louis XIV, est une critique en règle du règne de Louis XIV dans ces dernières années du XVIIe siècle. Cet ouvrage est attribué à Gatien Sandras de Courtilz. Ce n'est évidemment pas une traduction de l'italien. C'est une violente satyre.

Ross was a Scottish-born orientalist and served as a chaplain to Charles I. Some sources state that a quarto edition preceded the octavo. Robert Sandilands appears to have been born about 1656 in Aberdeen, where he served in various municipal leadership roles and engaged in the religious debates of his era (he was for time a Quaker, bit later rejected Quakerism for mainline Protestantism). André du Ryer (c. 1580 1660) studied Arabic and Turkish in Egypt in the early 1620s when he served as vice-consul for French traders in the eastern Levant. In 1631, he accompanied the French ambassador to Istanbul where they began collecting Oriental manuscripts and antiquities for their "cabinets of wonder," but such pursuits on the part of Europeans were not independent of political goals. As the Thirty Years War raged, European countries turned to the Islamic world for possible alliances against mutual adversaries. The French in Istanbul discussed cooperation with the Turks, as Holland did with Morocco; there were discussions in 1627 of a Franco-Persian alliance against the Ottomans. Europeans also turned to the large Eastern Christian populations in the Ottoman empire for supportand it was in this period that European powers began a process of co-opting these minorities, the disastrous results of which continue to resonate even today.

The first part of the work was written by reformer Erasmus Alberus, who selected for critical assessment the most 'blasphemous' passages from the De Conformitate Vitae Beati Francisci ad Vitam Domini Jesu of Bartolomeo degli Albizzi. It was originally published anonymously as Der barfusser Monche Eulenspiegel und Alkoran in Wittenberg in 1542, with a preface by Martin Luther. The French translation, by Calvinist printer Conrad Badius, who erroneously attributed the whole work to Luther, was published in Geneva in 1556. In his second edition (1560), Bade acknowledged his error and added a continuation. The present edition is distinguished by twenty-two fine copper engravings by Bernard Picart. The frontispiece to Volume I is composed of satirical emblems and the second (folding) plate depicts the mystical tree, whose leaves contain the forty points of comparison between the lives of St. Francis and Jesus Christ. These two volumes are sometimes found with another work by Nicolas Vignier, entitled Légende dorée ou Sommaire De L'Histoire des frères Mendians de l'Ordre de St. Dominique et de S. First American edition of the Koran, based on the first European vernacular translation, i.e., the French translation of Andre du Ryer (c. 1580-1660/1672), a scholar of Arabic and Turkish and for many years the French envoy to the Ottoman court. His edition of the Koran was published in 1647, and Alexander Ross (c. 1590-1654) is usually credited with the English translation used here, first published in 1649. This copy was owned by three members of the Boyd family, with their signatures on the title page: William Boyd, C. H. Boyd, and A. J. H. Boyd.

For Muslims, Islamâs sacred scripture can only truly be read in Arabic, for it is the literal, revealed word of God. Among English translations, however, George Saleâs remains an important landmark. âAs a translator, Sale had the field almost entirely to himself. The only full translation of the Koran in any modern language previously published was the despicable French version by Du Ryer, issued in 1649. A very poor English rendering of Du Ryerâs from French was issued by Alexander Ross in London in the same year⦠Saleâs translation is remarkably accurate. Throughout he has made full use of native commentators, as regards both the interpretation of the text and its illustration in the notes⦠His version remains the best [translation] in any languageâ (DNB).

The fir…st edition of Lancelot Addison's (1632-1703) biography of the Prophet Muhammad and examination of Muslim teachings. A scholarly work much informed by Addison's seven years living amongst the Jews and Muslims of Tangier, The Life and Death of Mahumed presented a revisionist account of the history of Islam 'free' from the 'many ridiculous but usual Stories. which the present Mahumedans laugh at as the malitious Inventions of the Enemies of their Prophet' (Epistle Dedicatory). It was published during the short-lived English colony at Tangier in north western Morocco, where Addison had been stationed from 1663 to 1670 as chaplain to the unfortunate garrison. The territory was acquired in the marriage treaty of Charles II with Portugal, but proved a sore thumb in England's colonial ambitions from the beginning. Shortly after Addison's arrival the newly appointed governor Andrew Rutherford, 1st earl of Teviot was killed in an ambush which left nearly 500 soldiers dead. Addison lamented the loss of man who 'would have made Tanger as famous an English Colony as it was once a Roman' (The Moores Baffled, pp.25-2). An uncommon work, ESTC records only 11 copies in institutional collections. It was reissued the same year under the revised title The First State of Mahumedism. ESTC R33059; Wing A523.
