Three page letter signed, addressed from Haslar Hospital dated March 2nd. 1839. John Mortimer [1782 - 185] was assistant surgeon on the H.M.S. Africa at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 appearing in the Trafalgar Roll by Colonel MacKenzie Holden [1913]. He began his career as an Assistant Surgeon aboard HMS Africa, a 3rd Rate, serving from the 20th August 1805 to the 3rd July 1806. He then served on ships including HMS Belleisle; the HMS Martinique from the 15th June 1809 until the 15th December 1809; on the 16th December 1809 he transferred to HMS Barbados until the 2nd May 1816. He served at Haslar Hospital from the 22nd May 1830 until the 2nd November 1842 being promoted from Surgeon to Deputy Inspector. An autograph note by MacKenzie Holden requesting details of Mortimer is also included as are a couple of later family letters with genealogical information. The letter is addressed to the officers of the Coast Guard, for whom he served as surgeon, responding to an effusive letter of praise and his thanks for their appreciation.
