This copy is a 1st trade edition, 1st printing of the work published by G. P. Putnam's Sons in 1975, and discreetly SIGNED by the author on the title page. The dust jacket is protected from further wear by a Mylar sleeve. ***************************************************** "This follow-up to the darkly humorous Amphigorey is wittier, more macabre, and more wondrous than ever. Master illustrator and iconic gothic storyteller Edward Gorey gives his fans 20 more nonsensically and mind-bending tales that draw fans and unsuspecting newcomers into a world only he can create. Gorey's pen-and-ink drawings spur the imagination and satisfy fans of art and the good storytelling. ***** Some of the 20 stories in this collection include: ***** 'The Beastly Baby' 'The Pious Infant' 'The Evil Garden' 'The Inanimate Tragedy' 'The Osbick Bird' 'The Deranged Cousins' 'The Abandoned Sock' 'Story for Sara' 'A Limerick' " ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| Edward St. John Gorey (February 22, 1925 April 15, 2000) was an American writer, Tony Award-winning costume designer, and artist, noted for his own illustrated books as well as cover art and illustration for books by other writers. His characteristic pen-and-ink drawings often depict vaguely unsettling narrative scenes in Victorian and Edwardian settings. ||||| . . . His first independent work, The Unstrung Harp, was published in 1953. He also published under various pen names, some of which were anagrams of his first and last names, such as Ogdred Weary, Dogear Wryde, Ms. Regera Dowdy, and dozens more. His books also feature the names Eduard Blutig ("Edward Gory"), a German-language pun on his own name, and O. Müde (German for O. Weary). ||||| . . . Gorey classified his own work as literary nonsense, the genre made most famous by Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear. ||||| In response to being called gothic, he stated, "If you're doing nonsense it has to be rather awful, because there'd be no point. I'm trying to think if there's sunny nonsense. Sunny, funny nonsense for childrenoh, how boring, boring, boring. As Schubert said, there is no happy music. And that's true, there really isn't. And there's probably no happy nonsense, either." ********** The above text was taken from, respectively, Penguin Publishing (via Google Books) and Wikipedia.

Edward Gorey (illustrator). A really lovely signed first edition of Edward Gory's 'Amphigory Also' from 1983. The near fine dust jacket is in a protective sleeve and is unclipped. The book itself is in almost new condition except for a crease in the front left endpaper (pictured). This is only the endpaper and does not affect the cover of the book. For this reason it is listed as near fine.

It isn't particularly attractive - see image, but it also is covered with a clear, vinyl sleeve. Slight musty smell from storage. ; Signed by the author on the title page to Condor Rogers, noted journalist and editor at the New York Times. "These fifteen titles, published between 1953 and 1965, feature stories told in cross-hatched pictures and (mostly) rhyming couplets, generously spaced in this hardcover book. In this collection the panels of these books are rearranged to fill both sides of a much larger spread, which gives the stories a slightly different feel." Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First edition. First edition, first printing. A signed copy in the exceedingly rare first state. One of only six advance copies incorrectly bound by the publisher in decorated paper over boards rather than decorated cloth; production was immediately stopped and publication was delayed. The publisher recalled two of the six copies, but the other four apparently circulated before they were recalled. The paper covered boards appear to use the same or very similar paper that was eventually used in the dustwrapper. Additionally this is an association copy, signed by Edward Gorey on the title page and inscribed to Andreas [Brown], longtime owner of the Gotham Book Mart. The Gotham Book Mart was a famous Manhattan bookstore and cultural landmark which was credited for promoting and building the success and career of the Gorey. The store became the commercial flagship of Gorey's works, selling his books, calendars, greeting cards, T-shirts, and other products. It published 15 of Gorey's books and the store gallery hosted exhibitions of his illustrations, as well as public signings by the author. Brown was named as one of the coexecutors of Gorey's estate, after he died in 2000. Near Fine with light toning to spine, light wear to corners, several small cup rings to bottom of front cover, light soiling to bottom textblock edge. In a Near Fine likely supplied (no cup rings) dust jacket. Housed in a custom cloth chemise case. A scarce item and a stopper for collectors of Gorey's oeuvre, not mentioned in the bibliography of his works by Henry Toleando.
