First edition. xvi, 525pp, [1]. With a half-title, an engraved frontispiece and six plates by Arthur Rackham, a large folding map. Finely bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe (stamp-signed to front pastedown) in later gilt- tooled red morocco, contrasting black morocco lettering-pieces, A.E.G., marbled endpapers. Original publisher'…s cloth bound at rear. Lightly rubbed. Very light scattered spotting to initial leaves. Overall a fine copy. The first edition of a popular volume of travel-writing, illustrated by eminent artist Arthur Rackham, by Irish scholar and Hispanist Walter Fitzwilliam Starkie (1894-1976), which, alongside its precursors Raggle-Taggle (1933), and Spanish Raggle-Taggle (1934), provided insight into the author's encounters and experiences with the Romani people and their communities across Europe. Starkie, who was fluent in the Romani language, also served as the British cultural representative in Madrid for many years, providing a warm welcome and a cultural centre for British and European intellectuals and artists, many of whom had lost livelihoods during the Spanish Civil War or the Second World War. Size: 8vo.
