Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Minor edge and corner wear to the dj; lightly scuffed and scratched; corners are gently bumped and rubbed; some light shelf wear; ex-library with the usual library markings; overall a nice used copy! Black boards with gilt lettering on the spine. Full-color pi…ctorial endpapers. 250 historical and informative pages nicely enhanced by black and white and full-color photographs and illustrations! "Since Cambodia's reopening to the world in the past dozen years, following its genocidal civil war, there has been a burgeoning interest in its history, art and architectural relics. In parallel with this growing popular interest has been a renewal of international scholarly work and corresponding publication on the Khmers. However, virtually without exception, these either have been aimed at the casual tourist, or alternately, have consisted of more or less esoteric monographs, highly focused on specific aspects of Khmer culture. A comprehensive survey of the Khmers, broad enough in its scope to provide an overall view, both temporal and geographic, of Khmer civilization, while sufficiently in-depth to satisfy the serious reader, has not been attempted in any language in the past half century, until now. In Angkor: Before and After , Professor David Snellgrove has provided a new cultural history of the Khmers covering the period from its very beginning in the 5th century right up to the present day, and dealing not only with Angkor, but with the whole range of Khmer achievements throughout the South East Asian mainland. Professor Snellgrove further enhances this history with new translations of several of the most significant surviving Khmer stone inscriptions, in Sanskrit and ancient Khmer, thus providing the reader with direct views into Khmer civilization. Deeply acquainted with Brahmanical and Buddhist religious traditions, Professor Snellgrove also provides unique new insights into the complex interplay of the two at times competing traditions and the impact of this interplay on Khmer culture and architecture of the period. He further clarifies the religious evolution that resulted in the eventual replacement of Brahmanical as well as earlier Khmer Mahayana Buddhist practices by the Theravada tradition that eventually predominates in Cambodia today. With detailed descriptions, complemented by rich illustration, of many Khmer sites, including both well known and many rarely visited or previously described, this book is essential reading for all who wish to further their understanding of this fascinating and highly developed medieval civilization.".

Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First Oxford Paperback Edition. 157 Pages Indexed. Originally published in 1958 this is the 1987 paperback edition. Previous owner's name label on front endpaper along with a date and penciled price. Pasted to the front endpapers are two news articles regarding the Khmer Rouge and the impri…sonment of an American woman dated 1994. Although the ruins at Angkor are famous throughout the world, the majority of the books about them are in French. This was one of the first to appear in English. Without pretending to be a work of historical scholarship it gives an account of the Khmers who built Angkor a thousand years ago, and vividly describes the great ruins in their wonderful jungle setting. One chapter of it is in effect a guide to all the most important buildings in Angkor. In the course of his duties as Commissioner-General for South-East Asia, the late Sir Malcolm MacDonald made frequent visits to Cambodia, and this book also contains an appraisal of Prince Sihanouk and of the part he and his subjects played in international affairs. First published in 1958 Angkor, now re-titled Angkor and the Khmers, with its fine photographs, is worthy of reissue for its account of a remarkable architectural achievement which is no longer accessible to the modern-day traveller. There is an illustration section at the end of the book with 111 Black and white photographs on un-numbered pages. Contents in Five chapters: The King of the Khmers, The History of the Khmers, The Life of the Khmers, The Ruins of the Khmers, and The Modern Khmers. Illustrated with a frontispiece photo of Her Royal Highness Princess Buppha Dhevi a map on page 12.
