"The truth is, the anti-slavery men who formed a part of the convention of 1787, were neither mouthing demagogues nor canting fanatics, and though unquestionably opposed to slavery, yet when the common good of the States required their action, they did not hesitate to join with their associates, in the recommendation of a Constitution, which beyond all cavil, again and again acknowledges the presence of the institution of slavery, and guarantees it as both legal and valid." (p7-8)"We are told now by such men as C. M. Clay of Kentucky, Lincoln of Illinois and others of that ilk, that the fathers of the republic were animated by the same views, and governed by the same political principles that distinguish them and the party to which they are attached. This I deny, utterly deny, and go to the record for the proof." (p8-9)Democratic attorney and former state representative and senator William W. Eaton delivered this speech on Saturday, March 3, 1860, at City Hall, in Hartford, Connecticut. He examines the actions and words of the "fathers of the republic" and comes to very different conclusions about the founding generation than those expressed by Abraham Lincoln at Cooper Union in New York five days earlier.While Eaton was speaking, thirty-six young men met in the rooms of J. Allen Francis over the City Bank in Hartford. The group formed a marching club to support Republican candidates that became the original Wide Awake club and elected James S. Chalker (1832-1890) as their captain.Abraham Lincoln had initially agreed to speak at Hartford on Friday, March 2, but he was delayed by speaking requests in New Hampshire and had to reschedule for Monday, March 5. Lincoln spoke in the evening, also at City Hall, where he was introduced by Connecticut Governor William A. Buckingham. Lincoln concluded his speech, "let us have faith that Right, Eternal Right makes might, and as we understand our duty, so do it!" After the speech, the original "Wide Awake" Club gave him a torchlight escort to his hotel, which delighted Lincoln.The Wide Awake organization soon developed a "uniform" that included glazed capes and caps to keep dripping oil, from the swinging torches they carried, off their clothing. The organization spread quickly from Hartford and within weeks was organized in towns throughout Connecticut and within months in towns and cities throughout the northern states.Despite Eaton's hopes, on April 2, 1860, incumbent Republican Governor William A. Buckingham narrowly won reelection with 50.3 percent of the vote to 49.7 percent for Democratic challenger and former governor Thomas H. Seymour. The margin of victory was 538 votes statewide, less than a third of the Republican margin in 1859. However, Republicans increased their majority substantially in the Connecticut House of Representatives and slightly in the Connecticut Senate.In November, Lincoln received 53.9 percent of the votes in Connecticut, to 21.5 percent for Northern Democrat Stephen A. Douglas and 20.5 percent for Southern Democrat John C. Breckinridge. Excerpts"The questions which now agitate the public mind are of greater and more vital importance than any which have claimed the attention of the people since the organization of this confederacy. New theories are promulgated, new doctrines are put forth under the high authority of leading minds in one section of the Union, startling in themselves, and, in my judgment, subversive of the principles upon which our government is founded, and menacing to the integrity of the Union."The great apostle of a law, higher than the obligations of that Constititution [sic] which we have all sworn to support, in his pronunciamento made at Rochester some time since, announced to his countrymen, that there was an irrepressible conflict between free . Size 30 x 24 Inches. A fine example of John Cary's 1815 map of england and Wales. The map covers all of england and Wales as well as parts of Scotland. Cary identifies all towns and roads, noting mileage between most destinations. First issued in 1796, this map was one of the finest and most popular portable maps of the country available and consequently enjoyed considerably popularity and an over 50 year run. The present example was updated in 1815. Later editions, published after Cary's death, bear the Cruchley imprint. Unlike most antique maps, this map has an interesting and known provenance. It was used by the American politician Samuel Atkins eliot (1798 - 1862) on his 1821 european tour. At various points in his career, eliot, a Whig, served in the Massachusetts Senate, was the Mayor of Boston, and represented Massachusetts in the United States House of Representatives. eliot traveled to europe on the classic 'Grand Tour' in 1821. Sailing from Boston, he landed at the port of Liverpool, where he acquired this map at the shop of W. Robinson, Castle Street. He traveled throughout england and Scotland, where no doubt this map came in handy as his route is marked in pen, before embarking for the continent several months later.
