De plus en plus dépendants de décisions lointaines et de logiques globales, habités par des individus, informés,… mobiles et de moins en moins soumis aux modèles collectifs, régis par des institutions souvent en crise et toujours en débat, il est difficile de penser ces territoires et d'y agir. Le pari dont témoigne cet ouvrage c'est que la pensée complexe constitue un gisement à découvrir, creuser et exploiter pour renouveler nos cadres de pensée et nos modes d'action, bref pour ressourcer notre vivre ensemble le territoire. Penser la profonde recomposition des territoires à l'uvre dans les sociétés contemporaines appelle un renouvellement d'envergure de nos représentations. Conçu comme un « construit » multidimensionnel par les acteurs qui le constituent, le territoire n'a plus la nature objectale que nos représentations traditionnelles lui prêtaient et les discours permettant d'en rendre compte ne sauraient sans naïveté s'inscrire dans l'objectivité. Si le territoire est un « construit » il appelle une connaissance constructiviste. . Cependant, d'une part, l'intelligence concrète des phénomènes territoriaux ne saurait valablement se satisfaire d'éclairages disciplinaires qu'on se contenterait de juxtaposer sans véritablement articuler. Elle implique une connaissance construite dans l'inter voire la transdisciplinarité que seule la démarche systémique peut aujourd'hui autoriser. D'autre part, ces outils sont, en l'état, incapables de prendre en compte les dialogiques actives dans les phénomènes territoriaux telles que celles qui associent l'actualisation et la potentialisation, l'ordre et le désordre ou encore, entre autres, l'ouverture et la fermeture. Elles sont pourtant nécessaires pour appréhender les questions telles que celles du projet, de l'identité et de la gouvernance qui concernent aujourd'hui tant les chercheurs que les acteurs territoriaux. Pour ces raisons la systémique complexe apparaît comme une référence théorique majeure, mobilisable pour l'étude des phénomènes territoriaux mais impliquant un véritable travail d'opérationnalisation qui fait souvent défaut. Il s'agit bien là de la justification scientifique de l'atelier « Anthropolitique et gouvernance des systèmes complexes territoriaux ». le système d'action concret en sociologie ou les modes de coordination en économie par exemple Mais cette posture épistémologique ne saurait suffire. La saisie et l'intelligibilité des phénomènes territoriaux semble de plus en plus nécessiter le recours à un appareil conceptuel apte à restituer, de manière non mutilante, la diversité, la multiplicité et l'enchevêtrement des actions, des relations et des processus qui y sont à l'uvre. Certes, des outils déjà constitués existent dans des champs disciplinaires différents et présentent une indéniable pertinence Dédicacé par l' auteur Pascal Roggero à un collègue Professeur d' Université.
