Add to basketA letter signed by Churchill as Colonial Secretary arranging assistance for an aristocratic sportswoman in Northern Nigeria. Churchill sometimes dictated letters for his staff to handwrite for him to sign. Churchill served as Colonial Secretary from 14 February 1921 to October 1922. He writes to Rennell Rodd (1858-1941), former British ambassador to Italy and then British delegate to the League of Nations. "I will most certainly do what I can to help the Duchess of Aosta", referring to Hélène of Orléans, Duchess of Aosta (1871-1951). "I think the best man for the purpose would be the Lieut-Governor of Northern Nigeria, Mr. W. F. Gowers": William Frederick Gowers (1875-1954), Lieutenant Governor from June 1921 to May 1925. Churchill notes that Gowers is currently on leave in Britain, and that Churchill is "having a letter sent to him to ask him to put himself in touch with the Duchess, and do all he can to assist". The Duchess was a keen sportswoman. It was reported soon afterwards that she had been on a shooting trip in West Africa, during which the Governor of Nigeria "placed his own special train at her disposal" (Bradford Daily Argus, 4 September 1922) - presumably the assistance that was requested. Provenance: the collection of Steve Forbes, chairman of Forbes Magazine, and presidential candidate in the 1996 and 2000 US elections. Bifolium on Colonial Office blind letterhead (page size 203 x 129 mm), handwritten on 2 pages in a secretarial hand in black ink, dated, signed, and addressed by Churchill in a lighter ink. In fine condition.

Before the war he had worked with his uncle Luigi, Duke of the Abruzzi, on model farming, earning the respect of Haile Selassie. Her husband was finally captured in 1941 and made a prisoner of war in Kenya. A fine pilot, he was allowed to take the controls for a few moments on the way to captivity, where he died after contracting malaria and tuberculosis.

Neuware -Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Saint Gratus of Aosta (d. September 7, c. 470 AD) is the patron saint of Aosta. He is known to have signed the acts of the synod of Milan in 451 AD as a priest. Gratus represented the bishop of Aosta, Eustasius, at this council, signing the letter that the assembly sent to Pope Leo I the Great in order to affirm its condemnation of the heresy of Eutyches. It is thought that both Gratus and Eustasius were of Greek origin and that they received their education and ecclesiastical formation from the type of monastic foundation in Italy established by Eusebius of Vercelli, which was modeled on that of the Eastern cenobites.VDM Verlag, Dudweiler Landstraße 99, 66123 Saarbrücken 132 pp. Englisch.
