Soft cover. Condition: As New. Painted Cover Art! (illustrator). PBO (Paperback Original) True First Ed. 144 pages. "Mel Dryden didn't know why the troopers at Fort Brill had knocked him unconscious until he learned he'd been accused of selling guns to the Apaches. When theh Indians struck the garrison and the fort flared in the night, Dryden managed to escape and took the mountain trail back to warn the people of San Sabo. He knew the Apaches were close on his trail and would surely jump him. In the hills he met Trina, the strange 'squaw girl,' who remained at his side when he had defeated the panting Apache scouts. Together they raced on to warn the townspeople of the impending Apache attack. But to the people of San Sabo, Mel Dryden was a traitor, a renegade who sold arms to the warring Apaches, and Trina, a half-breed, not to be trusted, fit only for rape." *** This book is part of an Original Owner Collection, of 2000+ Mass Market Paperbacks. Photograph. Condition: Near fine. Stereoview [10 cm x 17.5 cm] Yellow mount. Minor edge wear. From the Smithsonian American Art website- "In 1871 O'Sullivan joined the geological surveys west of the one hundredth meridian, under the command of Lieutenant George M. Wheeler of the U.S. Corps of Engineers. An army man rather than a civilian scientist like King, Wheeler insisted on a survey that would be of practical value. His reports included information likely to be useful in the establishment of roads and rail routes and the development of economic resources. Wheeler's captions for O'Sullivan's pictures provide geological information but also emphasize that the West was a hospitable place for settlers. "In 1873 O'Sullivan led an independent expedition for Wheeler, visiting the Zuni and Magia pueblos and the Canyon de Chelly, with its remnants of a cliff-dwelling culture. O'Sullivan's images of Apache scouts are among the few unromanticized pictures of the western Indian, unlike those of many ethnographic photographers who posed Indians in the studio or outdoors against neutral backgrounds.".
