S'ils furent peu lus par ses contemporains, qu'ils fussent juifs ou païens, les ouvrages de Josèphe furent soigneusement conservés par les chrétiens. Le Contre Apion, dont les tire exact est « de l'Antiquité du peuple juif » est sans doute la dernière uvre écrite par Josèphe, probablement en 93-94 après Jésus-Christ ? Dans ce pamphlet, où se mêlent histoire et polémique, Josèphe entreprend de répondre aux critiques qu'avaient soulevées Les Antiquités Juives, et défend notamment l'ancienneté du peuple d'Israël, fortement mise en doute par les milieux antisémites d'Alexandrie. L'auteur y déploie sa vaste culture en citant tous les auteurs grecs qui, selon lui, ont parlé des juifs.
