Curieuse fortune que celle des uvres de Flavius Josèphe : critiqué voire calomnié par ses pairs, l'historien est désormais la source principale de notre connaissance du royaume d'Israël durant les deux derniers siècles de son existence…. S'ils furent peu lus par ses contemporains, qu'ils fussent juifs ou païens, les ouvrages de Josèphe furent soigneusement conservés par les chrétiens. Le Contre Apion, dont les tire exact est « de l'Antiquité du peuple juif » est sans doute la dernière uvre écrite par Josèphe, probablement en 93-94 après Jésus-Christ ? Dans ce pamphlet, où se mêlent histoire et polémique, Josèphe entreprend de répondre aux critiques qu'avaient soulevées Les Antiquités Juives, et défend notamment l'ancienneté du peuple d'Israël, fortement mise en doute par les milieux antisémites d'Alexandrie. L'auteur y déploie sa vaste culture en citant tous les auteurs grecs qui, selon lui, ont parlé des juifs. A ce titre il constitue pour nous un formidable document. en grec et en français Collection des Universités de France XXXIX + 280 pages 12,5 x 19.
