Bailey (Liberty Hyde) is probably the preeminent American horticulturalist of the past century. He was a tireless proponent of the importance of the rural way of life in this country and played a critical role in many of the most progressive rural movements of our times. I am very pleased to be able to offer a copy of the first printing of the first edition of his book, The Apple-Tree . This small hard cover book (5 x 7 ¼ inches, 117 pages) was published by The Macmillan Company of New York, dated 1922 and the first number of the Open Country Books series. It is bound in dark green boards with gilt titles on the spine. It is nicely illustrated throughout with vintage b&w photos and drawings. Condition: This book is in very good condition. There is a good deal of bumping to the corners and spine tips and some wear and chipping to the cloth of the spine. Inside, a former owner has left his inked name and a date on the front endpaper but this is the only mark I found in the book. The interior pages are clean and bright and without toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact, but the binding is cracked elsewhere and thus feels a bit loose but is still holding together. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. Language: ENG.…
