Dust Jacket over fair condition blue cloth boards, gilt lettering to spine, with tear to top spine, brown stain to corner, slightly rolled spine. 152 clean, slightly tanned inside pages of English text. Previous owner's name in neat blue ink to first inside blank page, no other inscriptions. Page ends tanned with some foxing. Slight 'old book' musty aroma to book. Synopsis: Strange things have been happening in Snarl: missing animals have been replaced with marble effigies; ominous tombstones have arrived predicting future deaths. Detective Inspector John Appleby is travelling by train to consult on the case. His journey is interrupted, however, when the inscrutable Mr. Raven informs Appleby that he won't make his connection, and seems more than keen to offer Appleby a place to sleep for the night.

Board edges a little darkened, spine lettering dulled, with a very small stain to the bottom fore-edge of the text block. Dust jacket unevenly sunned, lightly foxed, spine heavily faded and the rear cover along the spine sunned and wavy, with light nicking to the edges. First edition.

First Edition (first printing) of this Sir John Appleby detective story. 8vo. 152pp. Blue cloth with dulled lettering to the spine. Cloth marked and handed and backstrip considerably discoloured, yet soundly bound and really quite crisp internally, and housed in a surprisingly good example of the classic Gollancz yellow dust wrapper, just a touch faded at the spine panel and very lightly rubbed at one or two extremities. Neat former ownership signature to the front endpaper and title page.

Condition: Good. A first edition, first printing published by Gollancz in 1945. A good book with some off-setting to the edges and browning to the spine. One small stain to the front panel. Previous owner's name to the front endpaper. In a very good unclipped wrapper with a small nick to the top edge and a little wear to the spine tips, but a much better example than is usually found.

Cloth. Condition: Good/Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. The book is bright and firm with a little dustiness to the edges of the textblock. The dj (protected, unclipped) has some fading to the spine and front panel and moderate fraying to the exremities of the spine ; there is a 4/6 sticker over the original price (which is believed to have been 6/-) Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
