It is a little-known detail of the famed abolitionist Gerrit Smith's life that he initially planned to pursue a law career, and this scarce pamphlet may be testament to one of his few overtures into that field. In this case Smith successfully argued for the acquittal of one Geo…rge William Zecher, a recent German immigrant in a neighboring town of Smith's Peterboro, in the 1856 murder of an elderly farmer. Good condition with an old stain at the bottom of the front cover, the stain leaving a (lessening) mark through the first half of the text; some light wear to the spine as well, plus a few inked notes top corner of the cover.
