Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. A gripping melodrama from Wilkie CollinsWhen the elderly Allan Armadale makes a terrible confession on his death-bed, he has little idea of the repercussions to come, for the secret he reveals involves the mysterious Lydia Gwilt- flame-haired temptress, bigamist, laudanum addict and husband-poisoner. Her malicious intrigues fuel the plot of this gripping melodrama- a tale of confused identities, inherited curses, romantic rivalries, espionage, money - and murder. The character of Lydia Gwilt horrified contemporary critics, with one reviewer describing her as 'One of the most hardened female villains whose devices and desires have ever blackened fiction'. She remains among the most enigmatic and fascinating women in nineteenth-century literature and the dark heart of this most sensational of Victorian 'sensation novels'. Hardcover, leather boards. Condition: Very Good-. Bound publisher volumes of the periodical issues, comprising Volumes XII-XV of The Cornhill Magazine, issued by Smith, Elder & Co., London, and covering July 1865 through June 1867. The volumes are uniformly bound in handsome contemporary three-quarter red calf over red morocco boards, with spines featuring five raised bands, gilt compartments, and gilt titling. Marbled endpapers and marbled edges throughout. Octavo. A visually cohesive and striking mid-Victorian grouping, retaining strong shelf presence and period character. Profusely illustrated with full-page plates and in-text wood engravings by leading Victorian artists, these Cornhill volumes represent the magazine during a significant transitional phase following Thackeray's founding editorial period, when serialized fiction and illustrated essays continued to define the English literary marketplace. Includes the complete serialization of Anthony Trollope's The Claverings, later installments of Wilkie Collins's Armadale, and concluding portions of Elizabeth Gaskell's Wives and Daughters. Within these volumes appear the concluding installments of Elizabeth Gaskell's Wives and Daughters (including the editorial notice following her death), the later and final portions of Wilkie Collins's Armadale, and the complete serialization of Anthony Trollope's The Claverings, alongside contributions by Matthew Arnold, Anne Thackeray Ritchie, Francis Turner Palgrave, Charles Lever, and others. As part of the magazine's influential mid-1860s output, these volumes reflect the sustained literary prominence of The Cornhill Magazine in the Victorian periodical tradition. Condition: Interiors are generally clean and bright with only occasional foxing. Exteriors range Good+ to Very Good, with rubbing to leather at corners and joints consistent with age; one joint shows minor weakness but remains secure. Gilt decoration remains bright. One folding map called for in text not present. A solid and well-preserved example of a substantial Victorian literary periodical in original nineteenth-century bindings. More photos on request and with our pleasure. Books will be carefully wrapped and boxed securely for safe handling during transit, with international shipping available. [Attributes: Bound Periodicals; Leather Bindings; Illustrated; Victorian Periodical] Approximately 750-800 pages per volume.

Page 103 / 104 has a long tear that has been repaired. (Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 409.) "According to biographer Melisa Klimaszewski, "The novels Collins published in the 1860s are the best and most enduring of his career. The Woman in White, No Name, Armadale, and The Moonstone, written in less than a decade, show Collins not just as a master of his craft, but as an innovator and provocateur. These four works, which secured him an international reputation, and sold in large numbers, ensured his financial stability, and allowed him to support many others". The Woman in White was serialised in All the Year Round from November 1859 to August 1860 and was a great success. The novel was published in book form soon after serial publication ended, and it reached an eighth edition by November 1860. His increased stature as a writer made Collins resign his position with All the Year Round in 1862 to focus on novel writing." (from Wikipedia).
