Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition; A Very Good book, missing jacket. A handsome copy of this work on the "diplomacy of violence"; an important text, parts of which were delivered as the Henry Stimson Lectures at Yale University. This copy is in very good condition showing some light rubbing to the edges, ink and yellow highlighting throughout the text, the original jacket back flap affixed to the front pastedown, an approximate 2" tear to the bottom of page v, and a PO bookplate to the front free paper. Overall, a nice copy with the original text completely intact; an uncommon book in the first edition. Not remaindered, not ex-library; will ship carefully wrapped in a sturdy box.

First Edition
First edition, first printing. Publisher's original red cloth with titles blocked in black to the spine, in dustwrapper. A very near fine copy, the binding square and tight with some bumping at the head of the spine, the cloth bright and fresh. The contents, with signs of a pencilled inscription erased from the top of the front endpaper, are otherwise clean and bright throughout. Complete with the lightly rubbed dustwrapper that has a small patch of fading at the base of the spine and is otherwise bright and without loss or tears. Not price-clipped ($7.50 to the upper and 56s net to the lower front flap). An excellent example of the American professor and economist's profound and influential analysis of the impact of nuclear weapons on diplomacy and international relations. Addressing the concept of deterrence, Schelling considers the ways in which military capabilities real or imagined are used as bargaining power. The author was joint recipient of 2005 Nobel Prize in Economics (shared with Robert Aumann) for "having enhanced our understanding of conflict and cooperation through game-theory analysis". First Edition Signed
First edition of this "exemplary text on the interplay of national purpose and military force" (Book Week).ÂOctavo, original red cloth. Boldly signed by Thomas Schelling on the title page. Near fine in a very good dust jacket with some rubbing to the spine. A very nice example of an important book, that is uncommon signed. In Arms and Influence, Nobel Prize-winning economist Thomas Schelling argues that bargaining power, and the exploitation of this power, for good or evil, to preserve peace or to threaten war, is diplomacy the diplomacy of violence. The author concentrates in this book on the way in which military capabilities real or imagined are used, skillfully or clumsily, as bargaining power. He sees the steps taken by the U.S. during the Berlin and Cuban crises as not merely preparations for engagement, but as signals to an enemy, with reports from the adversary's own military intelligence as our most important diplomatic communications. Even the bombing of North Vietnam, Mr. Schelling points out, is as much coercive as tactical, aimed at decisions as much as bridges. "An exemplary text on the interplay of national purpose and military force" (Book Week). In 2005, Schelling shared the Nobel Prize in Economics for â having enhanced our understanding of conflict and cooperation through game-theory analysis.â .
